1972 ramcharger hood

I have a 1972 charger 440 rallye that came with the N96 hood from the factory, but it was missing when I bought the car. I know that the regular hoods are slightly different between the 1972 and the 1971 chargers. The 1971 hoods have louvers all the way across the rear of the hood, while the 1972 chargers have a small plain space with no louvers about 2” wide between the louvers. I am really confused because I have seen some 1971 chargers with the space between the louvers, and I have seen some 1972 chargers that have louvers all the way across. My question is this. Does anyone out there have a 1972 charger with the original N96 hood, and do the louvers go all the way across or is there a space in the middle of the louvers? I bought a hood that was supposed to be for a 1972, but it has the louvers all the way across. I would appreciate a response, since I am trying to get my car right. It is one of 28 1972 440 rallye automatic coupes built, and is all numbers matching. Thanks for your help.

We were discussing this at the last Charger Registry meet and the consensus was the louver with the spacing in the middle is correct for 1972. Only the '71 model had the louver all the way across.

Since I was not around the assembly plants I would never say that some early '72s didn't have louvers all the way across or some '71's didn't have the spacing.

The reason the discussion came up was my dad's '71 R/T hit a deer when it was fairly new and a NOS '72 hood was installed along with a NOS '72 bumper(has the jack notches). So it has the spacing.

Yes it is...here is a picture of it. I cannot remember who was all in the conversation about the louvers but, I do remember Galen was involved.

It seems there is more "72" hoods with the center cut out to the air ram or R/T-superbees inserts that we think

Nupe

Seems to be a hit or miss thing on the vents.  Maybe due to supply and demand or just typical Chrysler.   ???

For what it is worth the hood on my R/T and the Ramcharger hood I have for it have the 71 style vents.  And the N96 71 Bee I sold with the original hood had the 71 style.

Nacho, that 71 looks killer with the white decals!   :yesnod:  Those are custom because they only came in black, right?

I don't know, I only have seen 71 R/Ts with black stripes also here in Venezuela but...

but would be more killer with white top and interior... similar to my car but dark blue instead black.

MOPARHOUND!

The understanding I have is the spacing on the hoods was a mid to late 71 model year change, that then carried on through the 72 model year.

Mine was built in February 1971 (standard R/T hood), and has the spacing.

maybe the same change as the buckets seats with different backs since mid 71

We also thought that, but aparently...

It looks that there is a lot of common characteristics on every year that are not a rule. suposselly 150 miles speedos where last year on 71 and there is a lot of 72s and even 73s with 150 speedos from fact.

Also labeled wiper and headlights switchs with icons on clusters beside the word that was an international rule since 73 but I have seen 74s with not icon labeleds clusters.

Maybe was just using the remaining stock on assembly plants on mostly cases.

You are right. '74 only came with 120 speedos.

Those are custom decals. Says so in the ad. That car is currently on ebay. I don't like the white stripes myself. Red would of looked a lot better I think.

I agree with you Nacho.   Didn't notice this until I pulled a dash and got it home.   Probably didn't really matter, but I figured I might as well grab the correct one at the yard while my car was apart.   :P   There were quite a few 3rd gens and the 71's all had no labels while the 72 up bezels were about 50 / 50 for the labels.

Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

I got the gap too and my car is an early build date.   The hood could be from a later car though since i bought the car as a project car.

I remember that car. Cool car. I drove the General that is in the background. Wish I had my original hood on my '71 Bee. I have a regular bulge hood with no louvers and the cowl vents all the way across. :(

2fast4u:
That 6-pack charger is stunning. At first look, I thought it might be black, but the underhood pictures look more like dark gold metallic (GY9). Coumpter pictures don't always show an accurate color, so can you tell me if the car really is GY9? My charger was GY9, and I have not seen a picture of any other Rallye that color. I have been trying to decide if I want to repaint the original color, and based on the pictures you posted, the answer is definitely YES!!!

In keeping with the original question about rear louvers on the hood, it looks like the 6-pack car has continuous louvers without the center gap. Can you tell the build date and confirm that the louvers are continuous?

Here is a pic of my 1972 Charger hood (original sheet metal - build date 6-2-72)...

That six pack car is freakin' awesome! :drool5:

MOPARHOUND!

From what I recall, the GY9 72 had the Six Pack added, and is not a real V code.   It was in one of the Mopar mags a few years back.   Sad to see the dash has the crack in it like so many 3rd gen's do.

The color shows up well on my monitor in the pic showing the radiator support and hood latch assembly.   It looks like a mix of dark green and brown, how that is Dark Gold is beyond me.   Just my opinion, but it reminds me of a utilty type color, kind of like "work bench gray" or "UPS brown".  Others' opinions may vary.   :Twocents:
