I'm pretty sure 383-400 stuff is the same (as far as bolt on's go) if the motor is factory, it would be a 400 since there were no 383's in 72. 383-400's are "R" motor's while 440's are "RB" motors. Have you thought about going the Stroker route? 383-400's make great strokers  :2thumbs: btw the floors are looking pretty good!  :2thumbs:

There is no difference between 400 and 383 parts.  Hell most B (Not R) motors will take a lot of RB stuff too.

I would venture a guess that it is the stock 400 motor.  Good to see the 8 3/4 back there and power disc brakes.  What is the VIN?  Is the 5th digit a P or M?  M is 400 2 Bbl.  P is 400 4 Bbl.

I would run that cooler.  Looks like an added on tranny cooler from mopar.

Looks like its T5 bronze if i am not mistaken.  Sounds like a cool find.

Thanks guys! Yep the fender tag says its a 400 4bl and I would love to make it a 500ci stroker. That oil cooler has the lines going into and out of the motor. I followed what was left of the lines after the fire it still has just all metal lines from the trans into the rad. and that oil cooler had metal with crimped rubber into another metal line on top of the block and the other one went down some where. If it will work well as an engine cooler or a trans and just as good as an aftermarket I would love to keep it.  :scratchchin:

I assuming the trans would be a 727. Since Im looking to go to a 500ci motor and I doubt the stock trans can handle the power from it. Are there any recommendations for a rebuild of the 727 or if I could convert to a manual trans that would handle the power I would rather go that route?

Unfortunately I wont be able to get her in the new garage at closeing. I wanna get the floor painted before I move anything in there!  :2thumbs: Has anyone used that U-Coat IT stuff from lowes or home depot? Just wondering if its good stuff :scratchchin:

727 would definitely be there.   And no reason to switch unless you like rowing the gears.   727's are bullet proof and can handle a ton of power.   I know of someone in AZ who can build them, and break your neck when they shift..

Wicked72

As far as the 727 goes, are there any paddle shift options for it? or any other cool shifter options? :scratchchin:

383 and 400 are virtually same blocks. diff is basically just the piston bores, thats the reason of the common intake with 383s ( and the eddy intake production and casting )

what I can't find totally logic is the spacer on it, being Performer intake is already done to spreadbore carbs... unless some earlier production intake was still squarebore :shruggy:

good find!

interesting deal about the oil cooler

To have a garage is an amazing thing! For all the cars ive owned I have never had a garage the could fit a car.. just to fit the tools. :eek2: As far as my build in going to mod the crap out of her!!! I love to see an original car but its nothing rare or special that would make it wrong to make a mod beast. I am going back and fourth with want I want to do.. engine/trans, power... Im going pro touring I know that much. to have a charger handle like a super car would make my day, I have done my fair share of racing both drag and track. And my first time at VIR changed my life. I am good friends with the vice prez of PRS Guitars and I was able to play with his Porsche on the track! I am working out what I want with XV Motorsports for the suspension. anyone have any exp with the company before I pull the Trigger?

Today Im buying a lil compressor for the garage! And maybe a DA to boot. Hitting up harbor freight for my hoses and air dryer. I had my wrist crushed by a 40ft ladder at work about 3 years ago and just got the check in the mail a couple days ago!!! YAY!! So im getting a few things for the garage then the rest is going into the car. Kinda of a crappy jump start for funds but what the hell, I figure I could put it into bills but what Ive been through and I finally have my dream car again I might as well put the money where it makes me happy :2thumbs:. Ill post pics later today.

I will be watching this one with interest since I recently helped my son restore a 72 although we were on a pretty tight budget. Sorry to hear about your injury but on the bright side, sounds like something good is coming out of it so not all bad. Oh and re friends with vp of PRS, they have some cool guitars! I am a gibson guy but have always wanted one of those PRS guitars with the bird inlays on them. They are sweet looking guitars!

Wicked72

Ill be starting on it this weekend i hope. Just a little interior sandblasting or dash removal :eek2: nothing major. I am looking to do a very clean set up. I have a ton of ideas floating around in my head of some custom touches here and there but I do not want make it to crazy, just clean. The garage is getting more toys, just got the vice and the DA. I had a paintgun but I have no clue where it went... time for a new one I guess. Getting a die grinder, and some blasting media. I am hoping to get the engine out in two weeks after I get the crap in the garage sorted out... need a shed bad.

So I checked out the motor. good news is I can turn it over by hand, and the plugs looked perfect. and it is a 400 but not the original engine. As I was prepping it to pull I noticed a few odds and ends that it had been removed at one time so it made me wonder if it was even 400. I drained the oil and it was very black and thick but wasnt gritty. The code is 4006530, does anyone have spec on this engine? I know its a 76-78 engine. I just want to know if it came with a 2 or 4bl carb and what the hp/tq of it stock was. I have looked over many sites but havent found those specs.
Next I am tearing down the motor and selling off what ever I can. then onto the body work.
