A friend of mine wanted to get rid of this old air compressor so I grabbed it.
I know it doesn't look like much.

1BAD68

but it's a 1947 Westinghouse Air Brake Co. 60 gal. 2-stage compressor.
The motor runs 1710 rpm and drives the pump at somewhere around 600 rpm so it's really quiet, just makes a chuck-a-chuck-a-chuck-a sound.
the little research I did say's these are like battleships, they were built to run continously and has a pressure lube system for the pump.

That looks like a top quality unit. Once you get it working and a few potential bugs worked out I bet it will serve you well for many years. Good find!

Way cool. Maybe you can find a period correct Westinghouse decal and some flame decals to finish the old school package.

We just bought a 1961 classic crown stove yesterday. This is what I get instead of a mopar...lol.
The reason I say anything is because the quality on this thing is amazing, no wasted space, and a nice little piece of engineering, just like your W. Cheers!

anyone know anything about this?
Its a "Binks Spray Systems" regulator with what I think is a water seperator that he gave me also.
It looks pretty old, I'm wondering if it would be worth using.

Man, that thing is oldschool. I guess you won't know until you hook it up to a paint gun and try it. Maybee some paint and an item to paint that your not to fond of.

We had some huge old air compressors at local navy base, that were in service up until last year - they were built in 1940 , 4 stage - High pressure units - 3000psi output.  The flywheels were about 5 feet tall !  -
Contractors put in shiny new ones.  One of the new ones lasted about 8 months before it went belly up  :shruggy:

#1 You've got to paint some flames on that badboy compressor.

#2  I suspect that device is a water separator.?

Other than the motor rating plate (1.5hp) there aren't any specs but I found a formula to use and find out what its CFM is.
It turns out that it runs 6.7 CFM at 90 psi, thats true cfm which is not what manufacturers put on their air compressor spec sheets.
Example, my little 8 gallon oiless says it runs 3.7 CFM @ 90 psi. After calculating it, its really 3.0 CFM at 90 psi and thats running at an irritating 3300 rpm which is what makes it so loud.
My new compressor turns the pump at 586 rpm and puts out 6.7 cfm. If it were turning the pump at 3300 rpm it would produce 37 CFM and would burn out in no time.
Apparently manufacturers rate the CFM of their compressors according to the motors peak hp which only happens at start up.

That's awesome....funny part is....it will probably out live us all!!!  They don't build them like they used to.... :rotz:
