Thanks, guys. I almost cried when it ran for the first time. There were many times over the past 8 years or so when I seriously doubted I'd ever hear it run again.

I was getting frustrated with it at first yesterday because when I hooked the battery up I only had a working clock, license plate light and map light. No power to the starter. We finally figured out that I had forgotten to install the engine to body ground wire and once we did that it was all good. Well, mostly. I still have some issues of course but overall it was a very happy day yesterday.

:2thumbs: Not sure if you saw my post about the trouble I had installing the Accurate Exhaust system but I'm pretty sure my situation was unique. They helped me out and it finally worked so I'm happy and it sounds great.

Sounds great Curtis.  Looks like you had it all taken care of.

I always thought you were suppose to let a new motor idle @ like 2k for 20 minutes or something like that?  Or was the motor broke in @ the shop?

Yes and no. In a sense you could say the engine was broken in at the shop if you consider this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOS5OV5o6oQ&feature=g-upl The cam has already been put through the paces in the rotating assembly under a load from the bearings, lifters, rockers and valves so you'd think if the cam lobes were going to flatten they might have done it then.

At any rate, the Smith Bros. have their own philosophy on break-ins, as most people do. They run them for 15-20 minutes at varying rpms staying away from too much idle. The oil pressure went straight to 80 psi on the mechanical gauge and 60 on the dash gauge when we started it and the pressure was good the whole time. It never got below 40, even at an idle later in the timing/carb adjusting process, so I wasn't worried. There are lots of different theories on break in but they said this one has worked well for them in the past so I went with it. Had the oil pressure been lower I might have been freaking but IMO it went fine.

On a side note, one nice thing about Brad Penn break in oil is the green color to it. It's very easy to tell when you've achieved oiling in the left head when all you have to do is look for green under the valve cover, especially if you're doing it by yourself. Pressure it up, turn the crank 10 degrees and then peek under the valve cover. No green stuff yet? Then repeat the process.

I don't see why there shouldn't be some burning rubber in the very near future. There's going to be a lot of fussing with little stuff all next summer I would imagine but she's all but road worthy now if you ignore the missing front end. :icon_smile_big: The brakes are done and the shifter is in. All I need really is something to sit on. :2thumbs:
