Bought a truck, then dealer calls and wants more money

I bought a '71 D100 today from a dealer. Unmolsted 2wd long bed 83,000 miles with a 383-2bb, bucket seats and AC. Doesn't run due to junk in the tank and a bad carb. They told me it was going to the scrap yard and the scrap yard would pay them $240 for it. They said I could buy it from them for $100 more or $340.

I said so long as the total worked out to be $340. So purchase price, taxes, doc fee, title transfer and licensing with new plates ended up being about $375 so I called it good, paid in full, and signed all the paperwork. I asked for the salesman I talked to on the price to verify it before I paid but he wasn't available so another salesman verified the price instead. I figured they're getting $20 total more out of me than the scrap yard.

I got back to work and the manager called me and said that $340 should have been the starting price before taxes, doc fee, title transfer, etc and that he wanted another $125.

So I'm trying to think of what to do... That pushes it out of my price range, but don't I already own it? It doesn't run so they were going to tow it to my house and send the title out to Olympia to get put in my name. I figured I did my due diligence and specifically asked for the salesman I talked to, and now they want me to pay for their mistake of having another salesman verify the price?

What does the purchase agreement say?  Did you already pay?  They probably took it on a trade and gave the guy nothing.  The best strength in negotiations is to be able to walk away from the deal if it's not working out.  If you already paid you probably own it but they might charge a lot to tow it for you.  It's a good time to have AAA gold service.

you signed the papers! in my book that's a done deal. it used to be that a gentleman's handshake would be sufficient but then modern times and more crooks out to get ya so they went to paper! if the papers are no longer good then i don't know whats in store for the world. all in all both parties agreed on a price and its should be just that. its not there fault as a company or yours as a costumer. its the other salesman's for the lack of communication
Restoring a charger is like a saying I heard along time ago "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it".... Jesus I wish I could remember who said that...

The dealership got the truck free. My vehicle purchase order says it is paid in full and that they'll tow it to my house.

You paid in full and have paper work stating that right? You had to go through someone other than a second salesman too I would think. If you had overpaid by $125 you think they'd give your money back?

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

That would be breach of contract. Don't be afraid to take it back and get a refund

I just called back and spoke to the manager about having a signed purchase order and he agreed with me but then tried to make me feel guilty about it. "You know where we're coming from." etc

Now I'm hoping nothing will be wrong with it when it shows up...

sounds like you got a smokin deal on it to me. SHould be worth more than that just for the parts.

Hasn't been delivered yet, but the manager called back and apologized, said he was in the wrong and was upset at his employees lack of communication.

I wouldn't be feeling guilty about it.  In fact, back when they stated they wanted 100 dollars more than the scrapyard would give them I would have likely told them to go ahead and scrap it then.
Trust me, ITSA426 is right in that they most likely paid ZERO for it in real dollars and they are just looking to bilk you for a few dimes.
I hope you enjoy the truck Jon.

Cool, thanks for the link. It is missing some trim on the bed. I just want to get it running and driveable at this point, not looking to dump a bunch of money into it. I did think GY3 (citron yella) would be an interesting color choice since it's a '71, but I doubt I'll get to painting it.

It is in pretty good condition, I looked at it myself. Grille is dent free, no rust holes anywhere. We gave it a quick tune up and it starts right up. Pretty good deal
