Buying an Assembled Shortblock

I am looking at buying this shortblock and am wondering what to look for when buying it and what to check. If I get it I would probably at least take off the caps and rod ends to get a look at the bearings and crank. Any input is appreciated.

I just emailed the seller to see if I can look at it on Thursday. I really dont know what to look at but I am thinking I want to check on the general cleanliness of the motor and that nothing looks weird, scratched, galled, and that it turns over kinda easily. I am also thinking there should still be cross-hatching on the cylinders.

Yup anything you can get access to, hell I'd pull it completely apart if he would let me but at least gauge the rods and crank by twisting on them and checking play. Plastigauge would confirm rods and crank are proper. Your going to want to tear it down and check everything before building it up anyway. That will be a cast crank motor right?  :scratchchin:

bordin34

Yup it says cast crank in the add. I will tear it down if I get it and at least check the clearances. Just to check it before I buy do you know what to look for, im guessing I dont want any movement from to back and to turn it over and it should be like turning a wheel with the brake dragging a bit?

Now if the guy is available thursday and its good i just need a buddy to help load it into the back of my pathfinder and unload it and take it into the basement, that shouldn't be too hard.

It's gonna be HEAVY  :o I'd drop it at my machinist shop and get it all torn down and checked first, if it's all good it will last years, if 1 thing is wrong it may not last 1 minute.

bordin34

I may do that. I just got a reply from the seller, I am the 2nd one to contact him and if the first guy doesn't want it then I have dibs.

IF you aren't able to purchase that engine, I have a cast crank 440 1976 or 77 Running when pulled WITH Trans still together I'd sell you if you come and get it for $500.00....Engine/trans is in Virginia..

Thanks, but I'm really only interested in that engine because it is only an hour from me.

Well, I actually got this motor. I picked it up yesterday from Frank. He's a great guy to deal with and super nice. Thanks Frank. Talk about a scary ride home though with all that weight behind the rear axle in my Pathfinder the truck handled terrible at highway speeds it would sway and the momentum would keep it swaying.
I am going to get the block boiled, cleaned, and probably honed as well as new bearings then I will start building it.
