Hey guys, the horns in both my Chargers don't work...well the '70 works on rare occasion. Question is what is the normal/likely problem with horns? Wiring is good, contacts at the steering wheel look good, is there a rely that always goes bad or something like that?
Any hints appreciate

before looking into the contact ring behind the steering wheel !  check horn connections  for  corrosion ! also  make sure the horns are grounded well !  via bolt through mounting bracket / core support !  ,  there is also a horn relay  by the side of the horns , check connections & for any broken wires as the all hang loose sort of  :yesnod:

Horn relay by the horns is a 69 and down thang.

Common problem for them to stop working is rust on the diaphragm.  I think someone on here or moparts did a write up on restoring them.

I'd like to view that post on restoring horns if anyone can post a link to it.

Do you hear any clicking at all when you hit the horn?

A383Wing

Connection inside the column, turn signal connector under the column, horn relay, or horns themselves would be issue....

any one of those will cause horns to fail

tan top, 70s have them at a side of the hideaways relay, not anymore on engine bay. Just right below the clock/tach attached with a screw directly to dash frame

3rd gens are plugged directly to fuse box. 4 prongs on 71/73 ( 4th proing are for key in buzzer ), and 3 prongs on 74s
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

tricky lugnuts

I believe you can first test the horns themselves using the car's battery - by just hooking up a ground and power straight from the battery to see if it sounds like it should?

My third gen had intermittent horn trouble in the past. (Horn trouble really stinks when someone's trying to merge into you!)

My problem was the horn relay, which plugs directly into the fuse block on my car, as stated previously. Cleaning up the prongs on the relay and cleaning out the female connections on the fuse block with some electrical contact cleaner and coating everything with dielectric grease solved my horn problems.

But it should be easy to test your horns first, to make sure they are not the culprit, and continue from there through the rest of the system as needed.

Copy all, sounds like a good project when I dig my car out

Thanks!

I have a similar problem. No sound coming from the horns at all. There is a clicking sound coming when I push the horn button in the steering wheel. I believe the clicking sound comes from the relay, but I am not sure.
How do I figure out what the problem might be?

Maybe you need to avoid cheap hors.
The more expensive ones make a lot of noise.
Gotta love a '69

Update, all horns operational...bad horns...who would have thought they wear out??

74bluecharger440

My horns were about as loud as a fart so I went to Napa and purchased a new set.. Now I don't have to worry if I have to wake someone up cause they are driving stupid....  Nice and loud....Plus they are tucked away so they aren't  too much of an issue with the original equipment thing...I'd rather have really loud non stock horns then crappy ones..   :Twocents:
