What's the best way to disarm old cartridges?

I've got a couple of 357mag shells and a 12 gauge shotgun shell that are old and corroded to the point of being unusable.  I can't seem to get the shells off of the casings on the 357s and don't have a glue what to do with the shotgun shell.   Thanks, Bob

Take the Channelocks to them. Squeeze the 357 brass right behind the bullets and crush the end of the shotgun shell. That or go out into the woods sometime and try firing them into the ground.

Thanks Bull, I'll try the channel locks.  If I'm not back on here tomorrow then something went terribly wrong. :o :o  Bob

Submerging them in parts cleaner solvent will usually deactivate them as well, it gets in around the primer.

Just dig a hole and put them in the groung, deep, do you want to blow your hand off by trying to pull them apart?

Throw them in a hot fire. :popcrn:

LOL!

Actually, that's how it's done officially. Build a pit, build a fire, toss in the small arms and retreat.

I had the same problem.....my nutty brother had 2 live 50cal just laying around in a box of junk!  :o

Actually, throwing them in a fire isn't that big of a deal. They'll probably pop but the bullets weigh more than the casings so what will happen is the brass will rip apart while the bullet just lays there. I still wouldn't stick my face down there and watch when/if you do it but at most you might get a piece of flying brass.

You're not going to blow your hand off unless you mess with the primer. There's no explosive force present without heat or open flame.

RECHRGD

Well, I did the vice and channel lock thing with the 357's and still have both of my hands.  I cut open the shotgun shell plastic end and got out the pellets and the wad.  I've got WD40 soaking the primer in both the 357's and shotgun shell.  Thanks,  Bob

I find them metal detecting and just toss them in the creek. If you got a neighbor you don't like put them in a piece of his firewood. I remember when we were stupid kids we dropped rocks on them
