I use a mix of dextron and ford type F...shes unrebuilt and with the extra grittiness of the type f i figured the mix might be better. (plus John_Kunkel does it so i figured if he did it, its OK)

If it was new id just use type f completely.

dexron III in a normal trans, dexron III with 2 quarts type F in racing trans.

Im guessing the ATF +4 would not be a good fluid for it then?

ATF+4 will work, as will just about any fluid, but the +4 is formulated for lockup converters and overdrives; as such it has better lubricating properties than some other fluids (good for the overdrive gears) and has less aggressive friction characteristics so it will slip a little rather than grab (good for lockup converters).

i know you asked john, but i will answer and he will most likely follow up later.. yes, it will cause more wear on your clutch discs over time, but nothing that will instantaneously cause failure.  in most instances, in a stock transmission, you will probably wont see any difference as the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are soft due to the stock VB (i.e. the transmission allows for more clutch slippage in between shifts to ensure a nice and smooth transition between gears).

Where you do not want to run a ATF+4 fluid is in a transmission built for street/strip or just strip action as the friction modifiers are not plentiful enough to allow for crisp and concise clutch disc engagement.

Will ATF+4 cause huge damage? in a nutshell, no, but it will precipitate a earlier need to overhaul your transmission than if you ran dexron/type f mix or just dexron III.

i would see no problem with that at all.  they do offer a friction modifier that can be bought at any auto parts store if you would rather do that.  that would be my suggestion.

Are some fluids thicker than others? I'm asking cause my transmission fluid always finds a way out...  :scratchchin:
