This looks interesting! I really liked the Band of Brothers series from a few years ago, now we get to see Pacific side of the war!

......and I don't have HBO anymore! :icon_smile_angry:

My wife's best friend's uncle wrote it. He passed quite a few years back, but the book is called "A Helmet for My Pillow" I have it, but i have not cracked it open. Going to try and start it tomorrow, before the show starts.
It's had rave reviews, supposed to be a very unique first person/Marine viewpoint of the war.
I'd rather die than go to heaven.

yup, the trailers I saw for Pacific some time ago looked great and I loved Band of Brothers.
I cut back my HBO to cut costs but now that the new seasons are about to start I may start up again,..
I just got a deal on 20+ movie channels at 3 Mos for $25 so that's cool,.. I saw Year One with Jack Black last night,.. silly fun but his movies sure have lost any edge.
Anyhow, he latest additions to my T.V. Schedule are..
Men of a Certain age, who's first season just ended.
any rerun of Trailer Park Boys I can catch.
Archer, dumb as a can of rocks and a guilty pleasure.
Spartacus (Blood and Sand) ditto, and I love the closing credits.
and Underbelly, the Australian crime drama.
add to that the latest Top Gear,
I've taped every Caprica but yet to watch a single episode...
This Month all the other favorites of mine are returning like Mad Men and Breaking Bad,..
So I'll probably soon re up for HBO
oh, and this new series Justified looks like it might be pretty good as well as LIFE the nature documentery...  :shruggy:
  Thanks for the reminder...

I can't justify pay channels, just don't watch enough TV. Top Gear is great but BBC America was the only channel in the next step I wanted but I couldn't deal with paying an extra $25 a month just for that channel/Top Gear.

I will just wait for Pacific to hit Bluray this fall for Xmas. We picked up Band on Blu (for like $49) and it's awesome.

I just ordered HBO to see it, I can't wait.  It's also based off the book "The Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge.  I met his son at a gun show about a month ago, he had lots of the things his father brought back in a display, uniforms and bayonets and such.  Looking forward to it.

I have read Eugene Sledges book and it is quite good.  From what I have read this is supposed to be the main book used.  I have been following the progress of the series for the last couple years and just recently started up my HBO.  I have cleared room on the DVR and I am ready.  I am hoping it is good since Band of Brothers is by far my all time favorite movie/series made.

I wonder if It will come out on DVD and if I could get it thru Net Flix. or rent it at the video store. I had a military history class in collage and loved it. I can't remember the exact figure but an american soldier was far less likley to survive a Japanese POW camp VS a German POW camp. Can't wait to see the show

I just watched this on HBO.  Someone posted it on Youtube.  It is the making of The Pacific.

Well, it was on last night.  I that it is was great, very intense.

I liked seeing the actual veterans before the episode like they did in Band of Brothers.

I just ordered HBO to see it, I can't wait.  It was onlt 3 bucks more a month to get it. If it's anything like Band of Brothers I will be pumped. Especially since it's about MY CORPS.

I watched episode #1 on youtube last night.  I just went back today to get the link and post it for you.  However, the person that posted the video has been suspended and the following statement appears:

This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by HOME BOX OFFICE, INC..

I wish that this would be available on iTunes.  I would buy every episode like I do for other shows.  A season pass to one show is much cheaper than subscribing to a full service of cable or satellite that I have no chance of watching enough to get my money worth.

Oh well.  At least I saw the first one before it was yanked.

Raised in Maui and born on Dec 7th I got used to not celebrating my birthday...at least on it's day...it's an island day of mourning. My former brother in law was a member of the platoon they wrote the book/movie about Platoon. Marks' father was part of the occupying force of Japan from the same unit that combined later as the 101st. This is the same guy who protected his daughter from 6 guys that tried to attack her, when he was in his late sixties. One tough guy. My son's uncle told him if he joined the Army he wouldn't have to worry about going to war...he'd kill him first...my boy went Air Force like his dad....his dad and uncle both serve in Nam...nuff said.

I watched the first episode, was a good show but not something I would pay to see.

I'll wait until the final show has aired, get a torrent for the while thing and watch it at my leisure commercial free.
III, we are everywhere

I've read a lot about Guadalcanal and the depiction of the Alligator Creek battle is very much how I envisioned it..
Dad was a medic there and never once spoke about his experience. My mom told me his four best friends died there.
(edit: not in that battle but in that theater).
This also reminds me, Dad left me a metal box with hundreds of B&W photos from his youth and many of them are from the south pacific where he was stationed with the Army Air Corps. even before Dec. 7th. many are from New Guinea.
Once,.. I was watching a show on P-38s and they showed an aerial view of Henderson field, Pop just happened to walk by at that very moment and pointed his finger at the screen and said,.. "that was my tent!"

That had to be trip for him to see that. WOW!

Well we are three episodes into the series now.  It is good. . . but, I am just not connecting to the guys like in Band of Brothers.  The guys in Band of Brothers were very likable and I cared what happened to them.  I know the Pacific is the Pacific and BOB is BOB, but I must say I am a little disappointed.  But to be fair, my expectations might have been to high.

i agree, not much connection with the characters..  :shruggy:

ACUDANUT

So far they have half of the facts. LT.Col Chesty Puller was shot 7 times at Guadelcanel and there is no mention of this in the Series "The Pacific".

There's a new show on BBC America called "The Inbetweeners" it's a total riot, to badthe rest of thier programming is absolute garbage.

I agree I'm having trouble figureing who is who, not a lot of clarity with the characters. And Ido believe Chesty was wounded in Guadelcanel.

ACUDANUT

Yes, Chesty was wounded at Guadalcanal and in the series "Pacific" They make him out to be a show off, Like MacArthur. Total BS. He was a Marines...Marines. He hated attention and the spit and polish crap.

THE STIG

I heard this series didn't live up to the hype so far either. HBO has some 30 million subscribers, Band of Brothers the first episode brought in about 10 million veiwers, The Pacific only got about 3 million in it's first episode.

Mefirst

There is a add campaign about that series over here in Sweden to, its one of the pay channels that is going to show the series.. The add looked good and I also saw the trailer for the series.. Found the episodes 1-4 on the web and actually watched them al today. Cant say I liked this series as much as I liked "Band of Brothers".. like already stated, there is something missing in this series, I just cant connect with the characters in the same way I could in the "Band of Brothers" series.. I dont think The Pacific series is bad, but its just not as good as Band of Brothers..

My :Twocents:

It could be the actors and the acting simply isn't as good,.. the B.O.B. had a few if not several quite accomplished actors going for it, and as much as I want new talent to succeed in their chosen careers  I find these guys simply not as involving or sympathetic, the third episode in Australia was heavily weighted to the one relationship and still i didn't make a connection. In the B.O.B. i could really differentiate between the characters but not so here.  :shruggy:
it's too bad cause I really want to.
