516 is the most common out there.  the 915's are a bit harder to find and they are a better head between the 2.  The 516 can make power though.  the other ones are very hard to find. 

I just scored a set of 516's at a local swap meet the other weekend in fact!

you can always machine a set of open chambered heads to closed specs.  most machine shops can do this (if they cant, you shouldnt go to them).  of course, the intake side of the head will need to be machined to allow your intake to sit properly if you do that.

by porting? yes... there is always a danger with any head.  if you are referring to machining the head to closed chambered volume, then there is no need to worry about that.  they are just planing the surface to remove material on the chamber side and on the intake port side.
