swapping out a 1972 318 for a 318 out of a 1970 b body

My sons 72 charger lost compression on his 318 a couple weeks ago. Has been a good learning experience for him on old cars but shame since we had just worked out a pesky electrical problem a few weeks earlier. I don't have time to really rebuild his 318 with him till this summer so we are thinking best (cheapest) option is to do an engine swap. We found a running 318 from a 1970 b body mopar that we can buy for what sounds like a reasonable price ($250). So question is does that sound like a reasonable price for a running 318? Will there be any issues with doing that swap I should be aware of?

Since my son and I are planning to tear into his orignal 318 over the summer and rebuild it as needed so he retains the original numbers matching motor. We just need something to tide him over till then. How long would you guess the swap would take? The guy tells me his 318 runs strong and was just pulled from his 70 mopar to put a 440 in it.

That sounds fair for a good running 318.  I see them on Craigslist in the $300 range.  I would feel better to hear one running still in the car.  Do a compression check if you can.

The engine swap should be no problem......should bolt right in!!!

ends up the engine was still in his 70 satelite so did get to hear it run in the car. No driving since the tranny was off but did start up. There was something going on with it though as it would cut out when you gave it hard throttle. THe guy that owns it said it has been sitting a couple months so he would check it out this week and either get it running right or not sell it till he did. Hopefully he can get it running right. It started right up with no smoke or unusual noises which is a good sign. ONly diff between it and our 318 was his car was a 4 speed car. Would that be any prob bolting up to our auto tranny?

Just need the flex plate off the old 318 and it should bolt right up.

Any balancing issues between the 72 convertor and the 70 318. I know there are with other engines - not sure on 318's.
