What is this thing? What does it do? I pulled it from a 73 parts car I'm taking apart. Its a small block car 318 with 8 1/4" rear. I looked at my other 73 parts car /6 with 8 1/4" rear and it has this piece too. I then looked at my 73 BB 4 sp car and this piece is not there, at least not from the factory.

Where was that piece on your other 6/8 1/4 car? It APPEARS to be the counter balance weight off the rear of the trans tailshaft to me...

Vibration damper to stop harmonics in the drive train....

AKcharger

Yeah, it's mounted at the op aft of the drive shaft tunnel right?

ralley72

Yes, its bolted to the trans tunnel above the drive shaft under the rear seat with three bolts and a top plate, the plate is then welded to the floor pans. Why doesn't the big block car have this? I have another big block car thats an automatic, but it will be awhile to check to see if it has one.

The drive shaft spinning in the tunnel can cause disruptions in the air flowing around the tunnel.  This turbulant air will cause the floor/tunnel to vibrate or hummm.  The vibration damper stops this...  In this case, harmonics = vibrations that create noise (and irritate the snot out of the driver)  :nana:

BTW... those things make great wheel chocks  (but don't trust your life with 'em) :2thumbs:

That's exactly what it is....The tranny i got with my engine still has it attached...It is attached at the bottom side of the transmission tail shaft at the very rear of the tail shaft itself....it is NOT mounted to the body of the car.  My original '69 didn'y have it, but this later tranny does, so i ASSUME it was used on later models.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now I know what it is, I still don't know why my BB Roadrunner does not have one, maybe to reduce cost?

I don't remember if my 71 or 72 has this piece. A 1977 Doba I had did.  No it is not part of the transmission.

it was introduced around 71-72 I believe (havent looked for sure on the 71 date, but my 73 Charger did have one) and was implemented on pretty much all later 727's.  I know 70 and below transmissions DID NOT have them.

Ok, well I have trhat piece underside my car and I'm having hard vibrationes above 80-90 MPH....but with periodic incresing... try to imagine this:

RRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrr ...

What I don't have the is dampener attached to tail shaft, what really came in regulary to C bodies more than A, B or E bodies
