What is the single support item you most wish you could add to your garage?

I was at my cousins shop last night and he is one of those guys who has every piece of equipment know to man and it made me wonder what the one thing is that I would really like to add to my own space.  For me it has to be a hoist.  There are other things I wish I had like better heating and cooling but really at the end of the day it comes down to a hoist and I know it is the one thing I am least likely to buy.

PocketThunder

A loft so i have a place to sleep when i'm in the doghouse!   :icon_smile_big:

I could sure use a hoist also.  And insulation, drywall, heat!, cable TV, you know, the basics..  :yesnod:

Definitely a radiant heated floor for the garage.  Benefit not only me but the bedrooms above it in the winter! :coolgleamA:

A floor drain.

Ok, I picked that because... I really want a welder and/or some sort of lift but both of those would be with the assumption that I will be doing a lot of work on the cars. I'm not much of a mechanic and I'm to the point where I'd rather have drivable (and hopefully reliable) cars. I can have someone else do the mechanical work for anything that requires a lift. A floor drain would come in handy for washing the cars but also for washing the shop, cleaning various car parts (especially the ones stored near any body work), wet sanding, and draining the garage from salt/snow/rain runoff or roof leaks(hopefully not). Plus, unlike a lift or a welder, a floor drain is very hard to retrofit so if I could have one installed prior to moving in I think it would be a big bonus. My current garage is on flat ground and one part of the floor is actually sunken so water basically pools and I can't use a squeegee or broom to push it out.

I guess it wouldn't be as important if you don't have running water in your garage (which I do).

Bob, you have a 4 post or a 2 post lift?  we have a 4 post lift at my dads house and double stack the cars.  Nice and easy, just drive on and lift up, no worries about where to set the lift either.

It's a 2 post. I can not take the cars or trucks up all the way because of the 10' rafters.

I know the new ones can be purchased for under 2k.  I can't get one in my garage due to a large support beam running across the roof.  I only have about 7' clearance

Most definatly a lift of some kind, 4 post, body lift anything, most tedious thing to me is jacking and jack standing.  On a more realistic side, a compressor and some air tools.

Hey rp23g7,

Check out Sears for compressors. We're not talking SnapOn or Mac by any means but I bought an upright 33 gal compressor that included a nice case with 3 pneumatic tools........3/8" ratchet, 1/2" impact wrench and an air hammer with bits. They come up on sale all the time as "special' packaged deals. This whole thing set me back less than $300. Cheers

resq302 is the only one so far to comment on it,this is one area I did'nt overlook when planning my addition on my house.Seeing that my addition was going to be garage on the bottom and living space on top w bedrooms,I knew that heating the space below would be very beneficial to the comfort as well as the cold trying to come from the bottom side. Not to mention great for the cars.Being in the HVAC industry I would be doing everything myself anyway so cost would be just materials, also did a ton of research before I installed it.
I did pre-plan for a two post lift,so got the measurements of the pads and diverted the tubing around that specific area, and also made the slab extra thick as the larger the mass of concrete, the longer it will hold the heat.Bottom line, anyone building a garage that is looking or wanting to have heat in it should definitely do their homework as it is a great system as well as very cost effective to run. So glad I did it,worth every penny!!!! :Twocents:
As far as my next item for the garage, since the first lift I bought was the four post,(wanted one of each),now all I need to get is the two post, most likely this year.

Adding a toilet was the best addition ever.  :icon_smile_big:

That's one thing that I don't have in my shop. I wish I did sometimes. I have a sink and a water fountain for good cold water, but the closest thing I have to a toilet is just outside the door and around the corner.

A lot of the hoists are under 8 feet tall. Most only raise a car about 6 feet. So the height of your car dictates
how high you can raise it before it hits the ceiling

A LIFT .... Oh yeah.  I have short ceilings and a narrow garage, but found out about the maxjax recently, and it looks perfect for my setup:
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200386167_200386167
and basically decided to buy it, but it's backordered everywhere at the moment (doesn't matter where you get it, they all drop ship from dannmar, so the backorder is universal).
