I am going to be buying a new strange dana 60 for my 68 charger. I have an Indy build 440 with 510 hp 556.2 tq, I am running a 727 manual valve body with a 3000 stall with a 295/50/15 tire any input on what gearing is best? I was considering 4.10 or 3.90?

Thanks Bryan

Ghoste

I wouldn't hold back now, go for the 4:10.

Do you do alot of highway driving?  :popcrn:

Not really, its just a weekend crusier around town.

Id go with the 4:10's if you dont mind the fact its not going to really be good for any kind of extended trips on the highway.

Also, what are the cam specs?

If you were planning on adding an overdrive (Gear Vendors) then I would say 4.10.  :2thumbs:

If not, then I think the 3.73 ratio is a really good compromise (is there a 3.90 for Dana 60?).

Even for just around town the 4.10 will get to be uncomfortable fast (lots of rpm and no mpg) :Twocents:

No you are right 3.73 or 4.10

Ghoste

The rest of the build isn't a compromise, if it's for around town then gear for fun and enjoy that Indy big block.

Good advice  :2thumbs:

Id say so.

If your mainly a street driver than enjoy it! Worst case you could always by a GV OD unit if you wanted some more highway friendly gearing.

I say 3.73...     honestly - This is why I love my 8 3/4...    pumpkin swaps solve these problems....

Why 3.73 ?  Well - with 550+tq you have enough bottom end...   hooking it up on street tires would be fun to begin with ---    honestly I am more of a street driving kinda guy anyway --   but as stated above - If you plan on adding a GV later on go with the 4.10's

Hey I am all for tearing it up and making the pavement cry for mercy. :drive:

I got me 4.10. Fun, fun, fun. But the Road Runner also has GV, so best of all worlds.

I just think Bryan should hear what the downside is: your rpms will be up and the mpg down, and you might be unhappy down the road with the 4.10.

Using a ratio calculator, it shows that with that tire and the 727, the 4.10s will have the motor turning a minimum 200, and up to 400, more rpms at 30 mph than with the 3.73s thru the range of 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Bryan, does cruising mean 20, 30 or 40 mph? What gear feels right, and lends itself to the driving experience?

I submit that the 3.73 is worthy of consideration to both hot rod and to reach an acceptable level of streetability. :yesnod:

oldschool

if it is just an around town car or weekend car, i'd go with the 4.10,s. i have one charger with 4.10,s and one with 3.54,s.both are weekend cars. i like the 4.10,s. not to bad on the highway for short trips.

4.56:1  :D

I think thats way to much for me :drool5:

Depends on what diameter your rear tires are...

/Tom

I'm running a 295/50/15   I think that about 27 in.

BBKNARF

I'm running 4:10 in mine with a 28" tall tire, @ 60-62 mph my rpm is 3000, not bad.
68 Charger, slowly in the works, 451 c.i. approx. 535 hp @ the flywheel, so far best time in the 1/4
11.21 @ 119 mph, full exhaust, stock suspension, 4:10s @ 3640 pounds.
