Lets play the "what the heck is this noise" game.

Early this week a new noise has popped up. It got a little worse yesterday.

My Coronets 440 has a alternator and Power steering, and the water pump of course up front, and the 727 for a transmission.

I have developed a noise i wouldnt call a squeal, but it sounds like a rotating bearing going bad. Not a squeal though. And it isnt really effected that much by rpm.

So, today, i was paying more attention, it does it in Park, Nuetral and Drive.

So i am ruling out the input shaft bearing on the trans.

I took off the Power Steering belt, the alternator belt and started the car.

It still made the noise.

I thought it may be some strange vacume leak, so i squirted starting fluid around the intake manifold and carb.

No change,

Thought it may be some strange airfilter leak, so i took the air cleaner off with the motor running.'

Same sound. If i go from Drive to nuetral or Park the noise stops for a few seconds and starts again.

I dont know what else it could be,

Anyone got any ideas?

I had the same situation and it was the AC pulley bearing.

I took all the belts off and ran the engine, still made the noise.  Park, Nuetral and drive.

No, it has manual brakes.

Converter then. Check flex plate bolts. They can tend to loosen.  :scratchchin:

Got a vacuum canister on it? Definitely sounds (lol) like a vacuum leak from here.

I got one of those stethoscope noise finders. You can also get some heater hose and put one end to your ear and the other around where you hear the noise. That works great as well.

Since the noise changes when changing gears it might be caused by a rapidly cycling pressure regulator valve in the trasnsmission valve body. This noise is alternately described as a squeal, a buzz, a whine, a moan, etc.

If that is the cause it's more of an annoyance than a real problem, the factory recommended fix is to replace the valve body.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Hmmm, i was kinda thinking that, the only thing i havent checked yet.   Vacume modulator on the trans, it does have a shift kit in it.  I will crawl underneath and check that.

WTF................ removed inpection plate, TC bolts not loose, no leaks either.

Started it up, no noise. took it for a drive, about 2 miles or so, noise started.

Came back, jacked up car.

Its not coming from the bell housing. it sounds like its coming from the front of the motor.

I ran it yesterday without the belts hooked up, so Alt, PS and Water Pump were not turning. And it still made the sound.

WTF..... Crankshaft?????, definatley sound like the front of the motor.

Sounds kinda like a belt does when its squealing on a pully lighyly. But it did it without belts on it.

what type of harm. balancer you got on there?

Bolts rubbing on the timing chain cover because they are backing out.
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

mikepmcs

wait, oooh oooh it's the harmonic balancer/pulley  bolts rubbing on the the outside of the timing cover, I bet that's it.  That bad boy spins no matter what.  Take it off and start the car and I bet the squeal goes away.

You may have a bad intake gasket or bad carb flange gasket.  I went through a similar experience this past summer.  I thought I had a bearing out (sounded like a supercharger whine).  Replaced intake gasket, no more noise.

rp23g7

Take the harmonic balancer off the car and start it??  What bolts?   There is the center bolt, and then the 4 or 5 surrounding it, how could they be rubbing on the timing cover?

mikepmcs

The pulley that attaches to the harmonic balancer has bolts to hold it to the harmonic balancer.  Lets just say it was originally an AC car and now the pulley has been changed to let's say a not AC car and the bolts were not changed.  It is possible the bolts are long enough to go through the pulley and the balancer and rub on the timing chain cover.

ie: Take the pulley off the harmonic balancer and start the car.  Sorry I should've made it more clear.

I gotcha,  I went out to look at the bolts, the engine is from a 70 Chrysler, which probably had AC, as it has a 3 groove pully on it still.  I was looking at it, the bolts are still tight, and the noise just started a few days ago, after i had already put about 2000 miles on the car since  i have had it.

The noise doesnt start right when you start the car, i had to drive it about two miles or so, before the noise started this morning, and it will stop, then come back if you go from drive, to park or nuetral.

It isnt rpm dependant either, meaning it doesnt get noisier or seem like it increases as you drive faster.  weird

i was thinking that your OE balancer (which has a rubber isolation dampner) maybe deciding to go south on you.  could cause squeeks in that area.  Noticed any major engine vibrations?

HMMM could be, although i havent noticed anthing worse that usual, which doesnt mean much, could have been going bad the whole timme i have had it.

Oil pump maybe??  never heard one make that noise though.   Oil light goes off  a second or so after i start it, pretty consistantly.

rp23g7

Well, it was too nice of a day to have it sit in the garage, so we went cruising.  60 miles diidnt seem to bother it.  Same noise at low speed.  but freeway speeds were ok.  Had a neighbor listen all over with a dowl, but couldnt narrow it down either.

rp23g7

Weird, i changed the oil yesterday, drove it to work and back, came home, re-timed it a bit, and drove it again, no noise, strange, dont know what it may have been.
