Ebay is Asking for SS No., Mother's Maiden Name?

I just attempted to log into my ebay account so I can save an auction to my watch list & was directed to a security page. I understand the need to avoid fraud, but ebay wants my date of birth, my Social Security number, my Mother's Maiden name, my credit card info, my first born, & my soul if I still have it. I closed the screen, then reopened another & went straight to the address bar & typed in the ebay address so I knew I was at a real site & not a fraudulent one. I tried to sign in again & was directed to the same page asking the same personal info. This made me angry, so I emailed them asking why this extremely private info was necessary.

Are you guys okay with giving this info to a site like ebay?

If this is indeed their new policy, I'm done with ebay for good. No way I am giving out that info on line to ANYONE.  ::)

I won't give that info either. If Ebay insists, I would imagine a lot less people will use Ebay.

You may have spyware on your system redirecting you to a legit looking page.
Ebay has never asked those questions from me.

Download Malwarebytes and run it on your system. i bet it finds something

The Malwarebytes scan found a Trojan & deleted it, but the same security page still comes up if I attempt to log in. I've had issues over the last couple of weeks with all kinds of viruses & tracking cookies, & thought it was resolved, but I guess not.  :shruggy:

Sounds like time to use the factory restore CDs

If I know a system has been compromised I format it and start over.
easier than repairing ones credit.

When I took my lunch break a little while ago, I went home & logged into ebay & wasn't directed to that fake security page so I changed my password. I also changed passwords to a few other things just in case.

Malwarebytes is a good program. Another one that I've used with a lot of success is one called Combofix... Just be forewarned that combofix is very powerful and should only be used as a last resort prior to reformatting. I've used it probably half a dozen times on different peoples computers that had viruses and were to the point of wiping and starting from scratch. Combofix took care of all of them.

When I follow that link I get "Page Not Responding". That looks like only a partial address any way. Odd.

Troy

Troy, this is a screen shot with the address bar so you can see all of it. I also added the page they direct me to asking for personal info.

Wow, that is evil raised to the 10th power! It is certainly a spyware/trojan.  :eek2:

You have to use multiple tools to get it off the computer. Bad news is that it may be days or weeks before some tool can solve the problem. Try a combination of AntiVir, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, and Trend Micro House Call. All are free. Keep them all up to date and eventually it will be found. You just never know today which tool will find the devil and when.

I know its not a good idea but I always have the urge to feed them some bogus info. To bad there isn't a legal program that could destroy their computer. :flame:

Here's a link to House Call. These are the good guys and it's a great (and free) program to run right now.  :yesnod:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/emea/

Their site is filled with info on the newest viruses/mutants/bugs/crap. Such as: http://threatinfo.trendmicro.com/vinfo/emea/

In the end, you may not care what the name of the "thing" is, you just want it gone from your system. Hope this works for you.
