What are some things I could do to my old laptop to improve the performance in it. It is slower than any computer I have ever used.

Adding more memory helps. Laptops are restrictive performance wise, not much you can do to them

More ram and don't use vista. Some laptops use special ram though and may only have two slots though. It can also be a pain to install more ram, like you have to take the entire computer apart.

Hmm How much would ram cost for a 4 year old toshiba?

Go to www.newegg.com and find some, you have to know what kind of ram your laptop takes and how much it can handle.

Skip newegg for this. Go to www.crucial.com use the memory configurator and it will tell you the max along with usually very good prices.

Wipe the hard disk and reinstall the OS. Then just install the apps you want to use, such as a Word processor, browser, etc. More memory as others have suggested. My wife uses a 7 yr old Gateway laptop for all her needs, Word processing, net, photos... A 4 year old one should have plenty of power.

I talk with you guys on my 7 year old Vaio Laptop. It's a 512 and unless I am just crazy with the pics it has plenty of operating strength. Once again it depends on what you want to do with it. I used this one all the way through my degree and still love it. I have a mini that has more memory than this...2 gigs and it's great to throw in the arm rest of the truck...big arm rest in a 3/4 ton Dodge and be mobile. However it has it's limitations. Every semester I would download all my papers to a CD and wipe them off my hard drive...this has kept the Vaio running VERY smoothly.

No problem. They make great RAM....

Corsair, Kingston are also good and have configurators on there sites as well. I prefer crucial, quality and inexpensive.

on another note, want to really increase the performance of the machine.....

get a newer hard drive, let me explain, most of the older laptop has a 4200rpm drive in it, now to put it into perspective, you spend a little money on some ram and yes, you will notice a performance difference, now go out and find a 5200rpm laptop drive and together it will be a new machine.

most desktops, cheap ones of the time came with a 5200rpm IDE drive... a good desktop upgrade is a 7200rpm drive, To my knowlesdge <im to tired to google> there isn't a 7200rpm IDE laptop hard drive...

check to see if your laptops drive is IDE or SATA. if it's IDE, get yourself a 5200rpm drive :)

I'm found a 7200rpm SATA 500gb hard drive for my laptop....less than $100....my memory is maxed out at 2mb, that's all it will take

I went from an 80g hard drive to a 250g in my Comaq laptop....was a huge difference....now I'm considering a 500g to replace that one

Only issue I hate is reloading everything...there are "clone" programs out there...but I don't know if they work or not

charger_cody

Hmm I will definitely check out that site. I am wanting the laptop to play games on so I was just wanting to speed it up a bit.
