Found this in a bag of parts that were getting junked and it looked to me like it was important. From what I can ascertain it looks like it goes on the front of the crankshaft either before or after the damper. If so I assume that it goes on with the small diameter side in first (by that I mean the side facing up in the 2nd picture goes toward the engine). How close am I?

Oil slinger inside the timing cover that slides on the crankshaft....

Oh great. :icon_smile_dissapprove: Inside the timing cover. :flame: Sonuva...

Anyhoo, which way does it go on? Or would it be obvious?

A383Wing

Will only fit one way correctly...the outside edge of the slinger will hit the chain if installed wrong...

And yea, inside the cover.....right after the chain & gears go on, and just before the t-cover

Your top pic will be what you see when it's installed on the crankshaft the right way

Yup inside the timing cover. It's purpose is to minimize the amount of oil the front seal needs to control.

Don't worry about it until your front seal starts leaking, then you can install a new seal and the slinger at the same time.

I decided to pull the cover and put it on last night. I was afraid the paint would crack if I took the cover off but it went ok. I think I'm going to zinc plate all the bolts anyway and I've got some overspray that needs to be cleaned up so now is a good time to deal with it. Might as well since it's on the stand.

Forgot your motor is still outside the box.
