Do you get questioned about driving your muscle car in the rain?

This girl I know, she's a big muscle car fan. Anyways, her dad owns a '69 Roadrunner 440 and they put it away every winter in their garage under a car cover. Even in the summer they only take it out in the sun. I took my Duster out one day last week and she called me crazy because it wasn't summer....even though it was a sunny day. She was worried about salt on the road which I've told her a few times they don't salt the road unless it snows. It hasn't snowed since December so all of the rain we've had has washed it all away a long time ago. Tonight she asked me what I was doing and I told her I just got a permit for my Duster from tomorrow until Wednesday so I could take it on a roadtrip. She asked me if I was taking it in the rain. I said "of course" and now she's acting like it's a major crime to drive a muscle car in the rain. I'm one of those guys who believes cars should be enjoyed and driven hard and put away wet. I'm against driving them with salt on the road but I mean, it's just rain and she's saying I lack common sense about not driving muscle cars in the rain. Not really sure what the main reason I'm doing this post, I just find it kind of funny. Do you guys ever have anyone bug/question you about driving your car not in the summer?

I tend not to drive in the rain because my car tends to slide a bit, but if I'm caught in the rain, which happened a few times it does not bother me I just use a little soap and water and
voila its clean again. Maybe she doesn't like getting her shoes wet.  :hah:

At least she has an appreciation for nice cars even if she does go a little over board when it comes to taking care of them. I'd rather see that, then how a lot of women just don't give a damn about a car and run them into the ground.  :Twocents:

Yeah, she sure does love cars but like Sixpack said, she is a bit overboard when it comes to taking care of them.

Well, I live in Racine WI and when Hot Rod Power Tour came here a couple of years back- it Rained" Monsoon downpour all day. Strangely, it did not affect participation or bother the 1000's of folks that came to enjoy the cars. Last year the Tour returned. Started in Madison WI, in the rain, and came back to Racine in the RAIN. Had record attendance and a lot of fun. This gal were talking about would probably have spazzed at the sight. The amusing part was when the rain stopped, everyone simultaneously hauled out the towels and started wiping. Looked like a pit stop. It's only water. Ya wash your car, don't you????

its not the rain ,its where the rain goes, and sits fo weeks maybe months .....the seal around these cars are not 100 % , i dont think they are even 75 % with brand new seals ....and don,t even get me started on that great big gaping hole behind the quarter window ....well no i wont drive it in the rain but if your going to, at leat drill some drainage holes in key areas....if you dont care about rust than forget about the hole ...if shes as good looking as she is smart ...marry here ...lol

Maybe if you live in the desert it's possible to always avoid rain when taking a cruise but definetly not where I live. I wouldn't take my car out if it's raining because
of the danger with slippering but if it starts while you are gone then you are in it.

It's not the rain OR the snow that hurts a car, it's what they use to treat the roads that sticks to the ground for months.. One good rain certainly won't clear it off as a lot seem to think it will... So, would I go for a ride in the rain this time of year? Hell no... Would I go out for a cruise in the rain in July? Probably not, but that's only because I'm a clean freak and I know it takes hours to get it back to where it was before that cruise....

Salt kills... Rain and snow will have no effect on your car unless you're driving around with it sanded down to bare metal.

TylerCharger69

I drive mine...in the rain, sleet, sun....and the rare occasion we get snow..(they dont salt the roads down here...the gulf coast provides plenty of corrosive salt in the atmosphere here anyway).  Yes...I have had people ridicule me for driving in the rain...it grips and handles just fine with no hydroplaning or anything.  I just tell them I would be happy to drive another car in these conditions if they are willing to buy me one.  That  usually dispenses the conversation.  Personally, if it's a car that's driven every day and not a Barrett-Jackson piece....I see no problem with it.  As long as it's kept clean from top to bottom.  What does one do.....spend a day with the car????  Oh the horror!!!  Which  I'm sure most of us would like to spend a day with our cars anyway.  I know it gives me a good excuse!!! :2thumbs:

Just ask Jeff, Chuck, Blair and the other guys at the shop....i take my car out in anything. Mainly because its unrestored atm and i want to enjoy it as much as i can before i start to treat it more like royalty. I wont purposely go out int he rain, but if you get caught in it oh well...its not the end of the world.

And the salt, and the sand... It gets inside your frame rails, in between your body and frame rails, and everywhere else that you could never clean and eats your car from the inside out...

But, we're talking about rain , not what they use to treat the roads , I guess

I do not take them out in  the rain.  Now, if I am at a show and a pop up shower comes through, there is not much you can do about that.  But if I know rain is coming, I have always left them parked at home.  After the many hours of detailing under the hood, it gets messed up quickly with rain and road grime.

Once in a while I'd do it, no problem. Daily? No. Too much work to clean up but they still won't melt. They've got four wheels and tires and two wipers. They were actually made to be used as all-weather transportation believe it or not.

Interesting timing though since today I was driving through Vancover, WA in the nasty rain and grime and here comes an off-white Lamborghini Gallardo getting on the freeway. That was an odd sight. You rarely see exotics at all, let alone in the pouring rain.

As I live in the Bay Area I have never been questioned about driving it in the rain.  ;)  No salt on our roads. It is just a car, after all  ( :o )

I try not to have mine out in the rain. Im abit of a clean freak when it comes to my cars. Its all a part of my OCD. If I get cought out in a shower theres not much I can do but If I know its comming Ill leave it covered up in the carport.

If you put the hours into restoring your car yourself, then you'd understand my response...Hell NO!

Water gets into places that you will NOT get it all out of....You spent about 5 years getting all the "Daily driven" rust OUT of your car, only to put it right back..Makes no sense to me, as driving in the rain when unessessary, will put rust right back on the car....

I drive mine everyday.  The 64 Custom 880 was my parents and my daily driver for 25 yrs.  I dont drive in the snow, but we rarely get any in town anyway. My car doesnt have its window felts yet, but i dont park it outside, at home or at work, and its only a 5 mile drive to work.  I figure its better for the car to drive it than to let the seals dry out and have leaks everywhere.
