By Best Buy....  :rotz:

Spent 2k on my brand new tower and was told a load of crap that this computer can do... Got it home. Couldnt do one thing I needed it too. Me and my dad bought it because we run a business out of our home. So it was kind of important..

Anyone else getting robbed by best buy?

Best Buy and other chain stores have the general problem of stupid staff. If you did get it from them you should be able to take it back within like 30 days for a full refund.

Typically I spend some time searching the net for info on a particular product before I even go into a store like that. Then I ask some of the same questions that I already know the answers to as a way to gauge the knowledge of the twit that is standing in front of me. I then move on or continue based upon their response.

Generally the low end stuff is always cheaper from dell or whatever company you go with, i mean low low end like 300-500$ stuff.

When you spend 2k for a comp from Bestbuy or del or whoever, generally you can build a comparable one for half that.

Well it was a group buy. We got the tower setup a laptop and a notebook. The tower I believe was around $900

Nonsense. A computer is a computer is a computer.  So long as it's booting up and running an operating system, it does nothing more than interpret 1's and 0's.  Perhaps you didn't buy the correct applications for it, but it would be highly unlikely for the computer itself to not be able to do what you need regardless of where you bought it.  Kim

FLG

That's very true.

Generally new computers can handle about anything but maybe not the best for some really intense stuff. What are you trying to do with it? What os?

derailed

Unless your looking to do some high end gaming I don't see why it shouldn't be able to do what you need. Maybe some of the programs it came with don't suit your needs for your business. Even the low end stuff they sell at the stores now days is overkill for most needs.

chargergirl

Cody if you were in Gainesville I would tell you to go see my son at Office Max. He is the "tech guy" and he's really good at figuring out what you need. Dependant on what your doing for your business you could need more memory, special programs, and just a larger capacity computer. For Christmas I bought a quad processor, 250 gig, tower from a friend of his...cheap...the guy built and just wanted what he had in it. It is more than we will ever need. If you need spread sheets or some type of accounts payable/receivable that's in the software you may need to purchase separately. For college you will need Word for Teachers and Students. If you will be using the computer for more professional apps then you might want to look at Pro...but most times you don't need Publisher and other programs in there for a home business...you can make professional looking posters, sales flyers, with Word or Powerpoint.

How'd you get screwed on something that's returnable?

A $900 PC should be able to do everything a business need - unless you are a graphic designer or editing movies.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

What did you get and what did it not do that you expected?
Kinda off topic, but last night my friend was try to fix his old laptop that wouldn't even go to the bios screen or whatever. So we took it apart cleaned everything and it still didn't work. So since he has an Xbox 360 and heard about overheating it to make it work, we decided to put the entire motherboard minus everything removable into an oven at 385* for 5 minutes, now it works totally fine.

Well the lady I bought it from said it had ports that can run double moniters, it didn't. She said it had a certain graphics card. not only did she say it, it also had it on the card display, got it home looked through all the programs, it doesn't. It's nothing too huge I just feel like I bought a $600 computer for $900. That and I was given false information.

The only prebuilt computer I've bought in the last 15 years was a Dell that I bought a couple years ago for $200. Came from governmetn auction where they were upgrading their systems and this one was just over a year old.

The rest of them I've built. It's not as hard as you'd think if you know some basics.

Let you actions speak for themselves.   Don't waste time getting into a pissing match.  Return it, politely ask to see the manager and explain calmly that you felt you were misled about what it could do.  Unless they offer you a boatload of free stuff as an apology, move on and buy from someone else.

Unless you are really good with this stuff, it's a good idea to find a local guy who is.  All of these IT guys who work for someone do work on the side too.  If you find a guy who doesn't have to have you pay his mortgage for him because you are not his primary job, then you won't have to pay through the nose.

As other have said, just bring it back..

I picked up an HP at Best Buy last week. 6G Ram, 1TB hard drive, etc.. I then put my dual monitor video card in and got my system up and running.. It's fast as Hell and does everything I need my home pc to.. Total cost, with extended warranty? $699. I figured, for what this thing has in it, that I couldn't have built my own system for much less...  (my last system 4 years ago cost me $450 to build).

Never.. EVER... EVER listen to one of the "experts" that work there. They have no clue what they are talking about, and most of the time the extent of their knowledge pertains to playing QUAKE online with their other geek friends at 2AM.

Good luck...

Also if you throw out or recycle your computer make sure you remove or clear you hard drive. I know somebody that took a computer from a recycling center that "didn't work" because somehow explorer.exe disappeared. The guy that took it was able to look through all this guys files, some of which were bank statements complete with his SS number, name, address, birthday, phone number, bank account number. I heard the guy even had the SS numbers of five other people on his computer.

yeah, that's always a scary thing... Identity theft is very real, and there are people that scout out "old junk" computer at landfills...

A lady at my work bought a laptop at Best Buy. After using it for a month it "died". She brought it back and they told her it was "fried" and they handed her a new system... A few days later I'm at work, where she sits about 20' from me, and I started getting some nice pictures of her family at a wedding. I yelled over "Hey, _______, thanks for the pictures, you have a beautiful family!".

She says "Thanks but.........". After a few calls, she quickly realized someone at BB had her computer.. they had NO IDEA who had it or where it went after she left the "junk" computer with them..

Scary...

QuoteAnyone else getting robbed by best buy?

Yes. I bought a computer there, took it home and set it up and it would not boot. Calling the store, they told me to call their tech line all the way across the country. Long story short..... I fiddled with it waiting for parts in the mail, installing parts by phone for 2 weeks, and when it still would not work, packed it up an went back to Best Buy. "Too late to return it" they said !!! Huh...WTF?! On top of that, the reason I had to go back down there finally is that they would not answer the phone in the computer department. The main line would have to ring 50 times before they would pick it up and transfer it. The computer eventually got fixed but it took a month - another company was brought out by Best Buy to come to my home and completely go through the thing (problem was the mother-board).

I would never set foot in that place again even if they were giving away the inventory. They have ridiculous rules and a discourteous staff that knows absolutely nothing. I got a little satisfaction when they sent me a prepaid box and asked me to return the new hard drive that didnt fix the problem: I mailed them some garbage in their box and sold the HD on eBay.

i got screwed at best buy twice...but it was by the fools who work in their new music departments...i was sold the wrong size strings...not once...but twice...now you could say shame on me for not double checking  ::)...esp the second time ...but when i ask for 12 gauge strings...don't give me 13's and then 11's!! :brickwall:

unfortunately, its the closest music store to college...so i have to go anyways
