Saw this slot car set in a car/gift catalog.     Has a Cuda and Camaro, but you can also get a Superbird.   Cars are almost half a foot long.   Its a little spendy, don't know the quality,   looks pretty cool though.     I am not a model expert, but the cars look pretty detailed, drivers inside, cool rims.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

Ah yeah, those tracks are awsome. I bought one a few years ago that has a Superbird and a Dodge Daytona. I was hoping to get a 500 to go on the track but no such luck so far, my wife won't spring the $45 to get one of the 2 500's they offer.

You can get just the winged cars on an oval track I think its called the Winged Wonder's track or something like that. The track when set up takes up an entire room, I think it is like 13 feet long and 8 feet wide.

BigBlockSam

hey
ny wife bought me this set and i also bought the black 69 500. i'm scared to mess up the cars  by wrecking them. the cars are really nice detail. Rene

Yeah we opened mine up and I let my 2 year old drive the Superbird. Three laps in his car was of the track and broke a little piece off of it. I don't really mind, as the cars seem pretty easy at this point to find another one and replace them.

I'd love the black 500 but can't get the wife to buy one for me.

Those sets and cars are way, way cool!

I don't have one of the race sets yet but I bought the #99 Charlie Glotzbach Daytona.  I took it to the local slot car racing facility but was too paranoid to take it out on the track so I left it in the box and bought a really cool '75 Greenwood Corvette and raced it instead.  Them cars run really good.

yea there to nice to crash and you know your gonna crash
LOL yeah really!   When I raced the Greenwood Vette at the local track, I pretty much babied it except on the long straights where I'd open it up a bit.   There was one straight where I didn't let out soon enough at the end of the straiight and it was a banked curve (six or eight lane track) and the Vette slid through the entire curve on it's roof!   Amazingly enought, there wasn't a mark on it!   I pulled it off the track and put it right back in the lexan display case that it came in.   Even though it was JUST a Vette, I didn't want to ruin the beauriful paint and detail on it.   I need to find me some beater slot cars!

No need for some beater cars. Just come to my house and your more than welcome to beat up on mine on  the slot track. I have a blast playing with mine with my son. And being that he is only 2, he hasn't quite grasped the idea of letting off the throttle to go through the corners. So they tend to go off track every once in a while.

That Daytona and Superbird are way cool.   And the black 500 is really cool.

Here's the Daytona and Superbird from that link you put on here.      Looks like the same brand set, you could buy both and probably all the track would fit together?     That would be quite a nice collection of Mopars.  2 Superbirds, a 500, a Daytona, and a Hemi Cuda.

I'd love to have that set-up...sweet! I had the Hotwheels s;otcar track when I was a kid...3 sets put together - it was huge. My dad and I would race head to head for hours, but of course they didn't have Mopars for those sets that I remember...had 2 differently painted Camaros. I remember it was a blast . :icon_smile_big:

Yeah mainly at car shows is when I get ribbed on about my age. Most people that don't know me assume that my car is my dad's. Then again some of those people remember my dad, so I guess that isn't too far of a fetch for them to think that.

BigblockSam, your saying I'm older than you are? Hmmmm,

Oh and John, I have some of the old AFX cars too. Funny story about one of those. I have a blue Daytona that is in the case, and the case has never been opened but yet the car is broken. The car was broken when I got it years ago. The entire roof is off of the car. Package has never been opened, and  the car is still fastened to the baseplate. One of these days' I'll get another blue one, and maybe I'll take the convertible one and play with it.

69_500

Well if you ask my wife she is currently raising 2 sons that are 2 years old each. I think i'm growing up again with my son. I might be a little more advanced than him, but then again I'm a bigger kid than he is. Other than I'm potty trained, but he is working on that so that will put him on even par again.

BigBlockSam

I'm 47 yrs old, but inside I'm still about 13. my wife and i have decided not to have children. less responsibility.

Ah kids aren't any responsiblity at all. You just feed them, wipe their butts, and send them on their way. When they fall down they tend to come find you and tell you what happened.

Hey I have that blue Daytona too!  That was always my favorire car.  Mine is the Flamethrower model with the operational headlights that got brighter as you gave it more throttle.  The crossbar is gone of off of the wing and I don't think the headlights work anymore but of voutse, I've managed to pick up a few more AFX Daytonas over the years in both blue and yellow including a brand new unopened one (with it's roof still intact no less!) but I don't think I have an orange one yet.  I think that's the tough color to come by.

Yeah from the looks of it me and John are the young whippersnappers. See what happens when you get into cars at the age of 18. Time flies by but your still a whippersnapper.

Yeah I picked up another blue AFX car about 2 years ago, but it doesn't seem the same to me. The first one was one of the few Daytona's I got when I was little. And its the only one I can remember never opening up.

Yup, you're absolutely right.  I sit here and get bummed out sometimes that the years ARE flying by but then I stop and think how much I've gotten to do by being into Mopars for SO long and then it don't seem so bad!

Funny I happen to read this tonight. I was at 41 Husk Mopad today working on his Challenger. Allen been talking about getting a pool table for his great hall of beer can's. Needed to have seen the original posting about the Club House / Mopad.

When I was around 12 my day bought me a HO track and this Daytona was one of the cars. Well as I sort of grew up track was lost but I hung onto the Daytona. My daughter turned 10 and one Christmas I bought a POS figure 8 track. Well I brought out the prizes Daytona and again I went off the deep end. Old house had a 1700 square feet garage. Track became 19' by 6' and 110 feet of track. Used dual transfomers one for each lane. Suckers where fast, being a ture Rodder they did not het left stock either. Rewound the motors, gold pick ups and other tricks. Daytona would run the 19 foot rear straight away at arould 1.1 second. Would get dissey with out cam 2 watching the cars.

Allen, do you really need a pool table? Track has been but up for 12 years now after I bought the current house.

:drool5:      Very nice collection.     When I was a kid playing with slot cars, I basically just used the ones that were included in the track, I would look at the store sometimes, but couldn't afford what I thought was so much money at the time, being a kid.     You could upgrade and buy some special racing ones, now I can't remember the name.      Got one once, it would stay glued to the track, and was really fast.   But they just looked like Formula 1 cars.     I don't remember muscle car bodies.     Those Daytona and Superbirds are really cool.   You are lucky to have all those.

I'm no expert but Tyco came out with the Petty Superbird and a yellow street Superbird in 1992.  The way I know this is that I scored both of em at a hobby shop on our first trip to Colorado and that was in 1992!

Can you believe that? Didn't even have a Walmart in thailand. Heck they didn't have an American fast food restaurant in the town we lived in until my Senior year in High School. Well unless you call Mister Donuts a fast food restaraunt, as they came to town in my Junior year of Hign School.

But then again I do have some great Charger toys that were for sale over in Thailand that I'm sure that no one here has. Because not many here can read Thai writing, or have ever even seen a Toy case with a Charger in it, with Thai on the outside.

Well I doubt she put it on ebay, she doesn't even like to go into that room of the house, let alone go in there to find something. That is the reason that is where I put her Christmas presents before I wrap them. Just put them in the closet behind all the boxes of cars, and she doesn't ever go nosing around.

However I wouldn't rule out here finding it laying around somewhere and opening it up for my son to play with it. She thinks anything that isn't in that room is fair game for him to play with.

After 12 year's I dug it out. Looks far better shape than I was hoping. Just did a track count and have the following.

44  15" straights 660 "
9    9" straights  525"
1    6 straight        6" where did that come from. ;)
22  12 curves    264"
14   9 curves    126"
16   6 curves     96" 45 degree bank curves
         Total       1404" = 117 Feet.

I started buying this track around 1985 and made it bigger around 1989. I just checked and it is TYCO track.

Dog, it was listed on E-bay. I did not post that it was listed there for the fact I was watching it. Cool than heck and would run the track as well. On the back of the stand that holds the car there is a HP meter that listed the estamited HP that car would make in scale HP. It is now out of my prices range, it is at $71.00 the last time I looked and reserve has not been meet.

I use to sand the surfaces rust of the track with sand paper, is there a better way to clean the rails? Is there a coating that can be used that will not make the cars skid out of the track?

Is there any websites that you folks know of about HO cars. Going to need tires, wheels, pick ups and other gear.

What is the scale of a HP car anyway?

Seems scale is 1/68th from what I was just told. Posted the math in off topic. Seems my Daytona if math is right does 5,000 miles a hour?

I wonder how many g's it pulls accelerating and in the corners.      Quarter mile time?

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

when I was a kid I spent every nickle on slot cars , & I had 5-6 sets & probably 250 feet of track , with a special power supply to feed it , I had 100 cars , & a ton of Mopars
I still have a lot of the old AFX stuff . probably 11 71 Chargers , 2 Daytonas 2 Cudas , a Chall I built from the Cuda , i even have a Cheetah ,, a cab over I built before AFX made them
now I have a bunch of old style Lifelike chassis , the only Mopar body is an Intrepid stocker , I have a buch of highly modified vettes [c5] & they will eat a Super G+  for lunch , 25% or mare faster & it doesn`t matter if the vettes crash !!!
the Carrera car are cool , I post pix of those about a year ago when they first came out but I don`t have any of those , space is much more effectively used with 1/64 scale !!

You guys remember the AFX Magazine?

Me and my best friend took a idea out of one of those magazines to make alunimin foil bodys for the cars. You would take the body off the car, then take 4in. by 3in piece of foil that you had already doubled over so it was 2 layers thick. Then you would center the roof of the plastic body in the foil, then start slowly forming the foil around the body of the car. By pressing slightly, you could get the foil to detail itself nicely. The we would take regular model paint, and decals, and paint the foil bodys before removing then off the plastic body. You had to make sure before you painted the foil, you didn't rub a hole in the foil though. They came out like they did in the pictures. To hold them to the motor frame, we would use some double sided tape that was really sticky. Then press carefully to the motor. WHY? It was kinda cool that when you hit the other car, or came off the track and hit a guard rail, you would get body damage. We would crash, them straighten them out with a small screw driver the best we could, then keep going til the car bodys either tore up, or were unrecognizable. I would build on like every 2 days so I had a lot of them to use.

Thanks for the link. Is the Johnny Lighting the hot car now? Sounds a little lame to me as far as the name goes.

Never heard of that foil trick.     That is amazing that thing is made of foil you pressed on there and removed then painted.   Cool.

When the car was all painted, you would take a scissors, and cut off most of the excess foil, and carefully (I used a exacto knife) to trim around the wheel wells. Then what you couldn't cut out, you would press in the underside carefully.

BTW; every so often, I'd go through all the work of making a body look good, and whoever I was racing would crash in front of me, and my car would hit his tire, sending my car airborne onto the floor upside down. So, I not only ended up with front end damage, I had to reshape the damn roof before we would continue. THAT SUCKED! One of the best bodys to use was the '55 Chevy sedan. They held up pretty good when painted. We did not paint all of them though just for speed purposes to manufacture them and race them.

Drove my self a little nutter today looking for someone that carries HO cars. I was feeling like I was looking for 69 Hemi carbs with the right date codes for a while. I think I may final hit pay drit, well find out Sunday.

On the tin foil, I have lite weight clear plactic bodys. You paint them from the inside so the paint does not fly off. Never care for them much, guess because they where not Daytona's, or Mopar's.
