I like 73/74s better, it's as if they perfected the body. they specially look better when they are modded to have the hidden headlights from a 71/72.

My favourite is 72, then 71, but I do have to agree with you. The 'triangular' rear pillar on the 71-72's does look stupid. I like the open (non-opera windows) 73-74 rear quarter windows the best. Not sure of the model? It flows really well with the Coke-bottle body lines. I also like the 72 SE, very cool, had one for 6 years. The 73-74 SE's with the opera windows, are kind of cool unto themselves. The 73-74 with that tiny little square quarter window (coupe is it?) are not cool at all. Thanks to all the guys who have ripped those babies out!

71383bee

No comparison...

71 had the last of most of the high impact colors, colored bumpers, spoilers, the 440 +6 (I know I know but making only 3 does not make this a real option for 72!  :icon_smile_big:), vertical door scallops, the 500 package, the Super Bee, The R/T, the HEMI, the special hoods you get with Super Bee or R/T, the smooth sidemarker lights, rear louvers...etc

Cons for the 71...well i don't have any because I am biased!

72 is next.  I prefer the horizontal scallops of the Rallye to the 71 vertical's, the trunk stripe is kickass, the V21 in organisol is awesome, the front grilles are sweet, still could get the AG setup, and BOTH years could get the flat out best taillights put on a mopar EVER...IMHO!  :2thumbs:  i also like the SE rear 1/4 window treatment and the fancy chrome trimmed taillights, and the last year of also the best exhaust tips put on a mopar...EVER (I know the E body guys will disagree!)

Cons for the 72...the cheap sidemarkers (sorry guys I know some love em, but using the same marker that you can get on an 80's omni is cheap) The standard taillights are vanilla, the fact that a rallye package could come with a 318 or 400 2 bbl ( I know you had to do anything to sell cars at that VERY turbulent time but a lo po motor just takes a lot of the fun out of the package), you could not get spoilers or louvers. other than that...

I like the 3.5 gens, but they don't have nearly the same cool ops as the 71/72's.  The BB's need a completely different K member, the 8 3/4 was dropped, no spoilers, the taillights are  :eek2:, the grills are vanila compared to the 71/72's, the aforementioned sidemarkers, the bulge hoods are cool, but no AG.  Personally I really dig the full vinyl SE's with the opera windows.  And I have to admit that i absolutely HATE the non SE vinyl tops...what were they thinking!  Why does the vinyl stop 3" short of the edge and then use 2x as much chrome trim?  It looks like a mistake...like the factory ran out of vinyl or something.   :shruggy:

However...I would not say no a nice 73/74 SE as a daily cruiser so please don't beat up too much on me guys!   :hah:

Here's a photo collage...

I'm not surprised with the results I voted for the 71's and 72's and I like them in that order.
I agree with everything 71383bee said only, I dont like the 72 SE 1/4 window (I can say that since I have one  ) never liked the sidemarker lights on 72-74's definitly the best option's and colors were in 71 not to mention true H.P motors.

Chargerguy74

It's a tough one for me to chose between 72 and 74. I prefer the 73/74 body. I love Sienna Metallic paint.  And then theres the V6R, V6Y, and V6K reflective side stripes. Now the 72 Rallye.... I voted for both.
WANTED: NOS or excellent condition 72-74 4 speed shifter boot for bench or centre armrest car, part number 3467755. It's a rubber boot that looks like it's sewn up leather.

Hah!

Hey man it's America!  There's no right answer really.  Next post will be from someone saying the 84 charger is the best!

I would not say no to any of them from a 318 car to a BB car.  I have my favorites though.  I would love a 73 SE in B5 and a white top with a white or blue interior as a cruiser personally...keystone or Crager SS's a nice exhaust and any v8 for me...She would make a nice stable mate to the Bee!

'74, just because my best friend had one in high school and we used to troll girls in it. Silver/black SE, 318 and clean as could be. I've considered finding one for a DD. But I plan on DD'ing the '68...what to do, what to do.

73. I've owned 2 of them. a red SE, white brougham interior, brand new, and a dark gold metallic SE that I've owned for 7 years. both equipt with 400 4 bbl, 727, 8/3/4 rear, A/C.
I really like the slotted opera windows, nothing like them at the time. set that car above others IMO. the red 73 was my 1st new car, a luxury hotrod, it was fast, comfortable, handled and rode well for it's time. the sheet metal is sleek and sexy. long hood, short deck, great lines and proportions.

What can I say, I have a thing for 1972.

My first MOPAR collector car was a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker.  I sold that and eventually bought a nice 1972 Plymouth Satellite.  I sold that last year for my first Charger.  A 1972 Dodge Charger Rallye.  I am building it, so I don't have a driver right now.  So, 1972 it is.

My 1972 Rallye:

1  71 R/T
2  72 SE
3  73 - 74 non SE

Best of em all would be a 71 SE with 73 - 74 doors & quarters & R/T hood & doors scoops

Heehee, Just stirring the pot. I had a 73 Charger for 15 years, but I always wanted a 71-72.  The 72's (rallye) are my favorite. Let's face it...They had Louvered doors, Louvered Taillights, Power bulge hood, Hide-a-way headlights. ect.  73-74 got boring and imo they ruined the roof/body lines.  :Twocents:

mikesbbody

I'm surprised how popular the 72 Rallye is  :2thumbs: very cool but not quite a 71 RT or S.B IMO. It's funny, when I first got my 72 SE I LIKED the fact it wasnt a 71 I like how it didn't have a bulge hood, stripes etc but then I started liking the 71's more... ::) now I want my 72 to be more like a 71...as for 73-74's I think they had their good points too. I like how there's no "Arrow" emblem in the center of the bumper. I like the quarter windows on the non SE models it would have been cool if hideaway's were still optional in 73-74  :Twocents:

As I just saw an original bronze metallic, '71 R/T 4-speed yesterday, in a garage undergoing freshening up, with 56k original miles, I would have to go with that year. Used to be dragged at Fremont raceway years ago. It was beyond nice...!  :2thumbs:

"they ruined the roof/body lines."

Never was one much for the Gremlin- like quarter glass DLO on the 71-72s, too much sheet metal on the C pillar, IMO was out of proportion to the body. Also I would say that the body lines, especially the A line was way more defined and crisp on the 73-74. the qtr glass slotted inserts on the 73-73 SE even though they hid the glass did not look as heavy as the 71-72, because of the vinyl roof and the sweeping molding that defined the edge. the whole effect was kind of organic, which blended well with the sweeping lines and curvy shapes of the body, a beautiful execution of styling, certainly not ugly. yeah, it did'nt have hidden headlights which I would have liked, but the tail lights were cool and highly styled.

I think? they made more 73-74's than they did 71-72's if so then easier to find parts for them
I think also because of the change to the suspension, the 73-74's give a softer ride I drove a 73 on a few occasion's and to me it drove better than my 72. I quite like how in 74 there were no "louvers? vents?" and the end of the hoods. But I read something about there being no 4 speed 440 cars in...73? 74? both years?
