1970 + Hide Aways

How many were produced with this option? How many in here have cars of this vintage with hide away headlights? Of those who do, how many need their headlight motors rebuilt? How many have a pile of motors in the garage that have stripped gears in them?

The reason for this bombardment of questions is I'd like to get an idea of wether reproducing the gears is viable or not. I have several motors on, and under my bench that need the gears, and good used ones are hard to find. I have spoken with Jules, and Mike at B E & A, and both of them say it's not a worthwhile cause. Is this the consensus?

The inquiring mindless would like to know,

Should that say how many 1971+?  I'm sure you already know that all of the 1970 models have the hideaways.

1970 and up were electric motors. That's why it's included. Earlier years were of course vacuum operated.

to beging with some numbers... all 71/72 SEs were hideaways. To add on this, all 72 Toppers were hideaways too. If you find that production, will be close

From there on 71 the R/Ts and Bees got options to the hideaways ( except colored bumpers ), not the rest.

on 72s Any model could get the option ( that's the reason why is easier to find 72 hideaways parted out than 71s )

yeah but still all 70 Chargers were with hideaways, so if you want the ammount of hideaways mounted for 70, find the total 70 production and will find the answer ;D

If you could develop a restoration process for the complete motor, to include your new gears, that might be a worthwhile endeavor.
The same process could be applied to all electric motors on B and C bodies from '70 on up..

not worth wild? well then they have no vision.....

68 and 69 had vacuum while the 70 charger had electric, a very popular conversion is to mount 70 electric motors in the 68 and 69 charger. If they had any clue, they would make em and add a 68-69 conversion kit as an option.

but thats just me.

I have a website, www.headlightmotorman.web.officelive.com that shows one that I did a whileback. I also retored one for Bill Howell that's on his killer '72 Charger. I also have a handful to do for Tony D'Agastino (sorry if I butchered your name) and a couple other people, and all of them need this gear.

I've been asked how much to restore/rebuild one of these motors. It really depends on what's needed. I am trying to keep the cost to $100-$150ish mark with a new gear installed with services. I'm thinking that the only thing to keep a motor from being salvageable(after the gears are available) is if the armature is toast. I can rewind fields, blast and paint cases, I have new brushes, new rivets for the brush holders and I have a company that can clear zinc the end plates.

I posted in another thread that the cost per gear is $30, and if you order 3 or more than it's $20 each. All I have to do is go pay the company for the mold(easier said than done) and the gears will be ripe for harvest in 6-8 weeks. Depending on when I can pull the trigger, they may be available by Carlisle, at which I can hand deliver them to those who order. I see the need for these guys, I'm just looking for some input on demand(and of course orders).

THE STIG

For what it's worth I have a 70 and the hideaways are a little iffy right now, for $100-$150 to replace the parts I'd be on it.

If the gears were readily available, would there be more interest?

sorta off subject of this thread a lil..... :scratchchin:
but if the electric grill on a 70 are better & more reliable than the vac one's in a 68/69... is it easy or a big deal to swap them out?!?!?  i don't mean the whole grill... but just how the doors open?!?!?
