What brand of motor oil would you recommend for a 5.7L Hemi in a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. The manufacture recommends a 5w30, also wouldn't it be better to bump that up to a 10w30  :shruggy:
Thanks.
68 Charger, slowly in the works, 451 c.i. approx. 535 hp @ the flywheel, so far best time in the 1/4
11.21 @ 119 mph, full exhaust, stock suspension, 4:10s @ 3640 pounds.

Well, the manufacturer probably knows best. Newer engines are built with less tolerances. The thinner oil will get to the parts that need oil faster with the recommended viscosity, and the oil will return to the pan faster as well. Also, running a thicker oil than what the factory states may cause overheating.

It makes sense, any particular name brand.

my 2005 hemi in my truck requires 5w-20 oil, even says so on the oil cap.  I work at o'reilly auto parts and they state 5w-20 on their specs too.. I did look up in my chiltons and they say 5w-30, not sure why there is a discrepancy between the two... maybe they didnt update the years.. they do say to check with your local autoparts store to see what oil is required as the manufacture updates these specifications with different years.

My chilton book covers 2002-2005 dodge trucks, so maybe that is the reason why they state that.  the new body style started in 2003, hence the difference? hmmm :scratchchin:

The 5.7 Hemi in my '05 Magnum also requires 5W-20. I know a lot of guys run Mobil 1 or other synthetics, but since I change every 3000 miles I run regular dino oil, usually Chevron as I have a buddy that gets me a decent price on it.

No reason to change.
All the newer 5.7 run 5W-20 with the mds. This is for optimal gas mileage.
Get a good synthetic and use it if you are worried about running a 5W-30
Now comes time for a cheap plug- www.superiorlubrication.com

I always prefer Castrol. If you can afford Castrol syntec, go for it.

Is it ok to use a synthetic oil in a new engine ? or do you have to put a few hundred miles on it, or more.

Nothing wrong with synthetics. As a matter of fact you can change all of the fluids to synthetic to prolong service intervals and better protection of components.
