My bother lives in Greenville SC.  Were thinking about moving down there from up here in New England.  Please list good and bad things about the state and post lots of pictures.     Any help would be appreciated.

Been there a few times. Went to Charleston, S.C. side of Augusta, several trips on the way to Charlotte. Not bad....
Lots of empty places on the interstate between towns. Gets as hot as Georgia and humidity is just as bad. More chance of hurricanes than georgia.

* They fly the Confererate flag (with lots and lots of pride)

* On a positive note the governor was named the 2009 Trail Hiker of the Year by the Tiger (I don't pay for it like Elliot Spitzer) Woods It's In The Hole Society, Las Vegas Chapter.

The last one is light hearted, the first five are facts.

Maybe you go there and get an extended stay hotel, say in August, and kick the tires and hang with the locals for a month.

   I can't say anything about SC. but I moved from MASS. in May 09 to  Raleigh NC. and don't regret it. Yes it is hot and humid but you have whole house air conditioning but but I've seen it just as hot in Ma. but obviously not for as long. The property tax is 20% that  of Ma. and you won't spend as much on heat. We should get by on one tank of propane.  Sales tax is more here as is car insurance and electricity  but its not deadly. Real Estate is less here, Fuel is the same and food is a little less expensive.  The Yankee factor is almost nonexistent. The subdivision I am in is about 90% Yankee. You'll be in stock car country.  On an average people are more friendly and not as vicious  while driving as us former Massholes were.  Building codes don't seem to be as stringent here. You do hear gunfire around from time to time. I'm  not familiar with gun laws though. Roads are a whole bunch better here than up north as the ground doesn't freeze and cause pot holes and the road doesn't break up.. Things do seem further apart here as it seems we put on more mileage than up north. You can spend as much on a backyard grill as on a good used car.  If you like beaches they blow away anything we had up north.

My son lives in SC and has for the last 5 years. He wouldn't move back to PA. He loves it. He did say the sand fleas suck.

new yorker moving to the south - thinking about moving to Summerville, SC - houses look pretty nice and not too far from the beach - prices are low and taxes are low - looks like the job market is not the great in SC - could work on my car year round in SC.

We visited with some of my wifes friends in Charleston two years ago and I enjoyed it. The history of the area was interesting as well. The weather seemed quite nice but the hurricane threat is real. Where my wife vacationed back in high school took a direct hit and was wiped out back in the 90's. I think her friend said there was no power for three weeks and they were inland a long ways.

One thing for northerners to watch out for are termites when house shopping down south.

I lived in St. Augustine, Florida and would probably move back down there if I were to ever make any huge move again. I really like that area and the storms seem to either hit south Florida or head up into the Carolina's. I move is probably not likely to happen any time soon though as we are pretty settled in here.
