Anything you can share about it?  I have never been and have often wondered what it's like.

 The Salt Flats is such a unique place, when you're out there even though there is racing going on there is a serenity that you have to experience for yourself. It has its own beauty that is kind of difficult to put into words. All that white salt, and the mountain to the west that seems to jut out of no where, the quiet there but yet high RPM engine sound in the distance as a racer makes a run, and the pit area where you can look at the race machines and talk with the owners makes for an enjoyable outing in my opinion.
Theres not a lot of action like you'd find at many events, so its not for everyone. But I find a day spent there as being rather relaxing. You definitely feel as though you're a way from the world. And the actual racers don't seem to be concerned with feeding their ego's or impressing others, they are there to break land speed records.

So you aren't that close to actual racing surface then?

I have a semi-recent rule book and have been down on the flats five or six times, but never at the events. The Golden Nugget casino in nearby Wendover has a cool area with some cars, models, and information displayed near the banquet facilities. Hot Rod Magazine usually covers this every year which so far has satisfied my thirst.

I know two people who have run on the salt....you never completely get it out of the car again. I will go someday. It is gear-head heaven.

burkland is the chief engineer for the company that i work for his car is simply amazing. i live east of the flats and never have gone. but it is stunning scenery we drive the old railroad tressle all the time coyote hunting and have to drive by the speedway to get fuel at the shell gas station. it really is out in the middle of no where by the way you dont wanna get stranded!

So you aren't that close to actual racing surface then?

The spectators can get about a .5 mile from the long course, where the big boys run.  They can also enter the pit and poke around the cars and talk to folks.  I'm there every year, usually with one or 2 cars.

I've been to Speedweek since 2003 and for me it is the hightlight of the year. Every year since the first time I have thought that I would someday return with a car to compete. It has not happened yet although I have finally got something in the works. Some of the highs I've got to witness are; last year one of the first few runs of the event was George Poteet's Speed Demon I believe he qialified for a record on that run. Another good one was attending the drivers meeting and taking a trip down the short coarse. Getting up early on Sunday morning and watching the sun rise over the salt at the starting line. The mood is electric because the first runs of the day are all record runs. I will be there agian this year car-less but still happy to be threre.

I used to work at a tech school in Wyoming and while I was there I would encourage the students to attend the opening weekend of Speedweek, quite a few did. It seems that may have helped get a few more young people addicted to the salt, now each year I run into a few of the former students that attended while I was there.
