West coast drag racing versus east in the 60's

Why do you suppose it was that during the 60's, door slammers were so much more popular on the east coast than the west?  By the same token, why were the rail slingshots so much preferred by the west coast racers?

 i think the west coast was more innovative then the east just because of the development that could carry on year round here and the sheer volume of tracks and shops and engineers. Most of the tracks were here in the early days.
Are any of you east coast guys out tinkering in your driveways now?..  :nana:

It was certainly the cradle.  Technical innovation wasn't lacking in the stock and super stock classes though either was it?
