I got a call today about a 20,000 mile hemi, 4-speed,buildsheet, 1966 coronet. I have not seen it yet so I may be early in asking but I want to go with money in hand. I am told it is in good condition. I don't know the color or any other details. Can someone chime in? Anything I should look for or be aware of. How do I decipher the hemi and 4-speed on the car or buildsheet? These things never happen to me. I am going to look Thursday.

I thought this might be the one until I read the ad. This one has 3600 miles. A true sleeper car!  :2thumbs:

I pointed to two old drunks sitting across the bar from us and told my friend
"That's us in 10 years".
He said "That's a mirror, dip-shit!

Wonder where I could print off some info to take with me. I dont know how to read the build sheet or fender tag. I know a '70 car the hemi is denoted with an "R", but what about the earlier cars? Is the VIN stamped in the block and where? The car should have a Dana shouldn't it?  I'm gonna go prepared to buy the car but want to be informed before I make the big mistake. Any help will be appreciated. If it works out I will post the pics.

If it's a genuine '66 Hemi Coronet, the first 6 characters of the VIN will be one of the following:
WE21H6 (2 dr sedan)
WE41H6 (4 dr sedan)
WL21H6 (2 dr sedan deluxe)
WL41H6 (4 dr sedan deluxe)
WH23H6 (2 dr 440 hardtop)
WH27H6 (440 convertible)
WH41H6 (4 dr 440 sedan)
WP23H6 (2 dr 500 hardtop)
WP27H6 (500 convertible)

Those are pretty much all your possibilities. Condition and body style will go a long way in determining what it's worth. Pass on whatever info you have when you know more.

And not to be patronizing if you already know but the VIN tag for a 66 (or 67) will be in the drivers side door jamb on the front edge between the upper and lower door hinge.

I do not want to belittle you, but if you don't know these cars very well and if you are going to invest a large bundle of cash (at least seeing the prices of the other cars for me that would be a large sum of money, although everything is relative) wouldn't you invite a person along that knows these cars very well and can also judge how much of a survivor it really is?

Arthur, I have an expert that will be available by phone. I have decided if the guy wont take a deposit and wait a few days for the remainder until I get a further inspection , then something is probably no-good anyway. I am getting leary of travelling with cash. I don't walk into unfamiliar surroundings with cash anymore like I once would.

95K for any 66 Hemi coronet with a roof ,,, they're gonna it have for sale for a LOOOOOOOONG time, survivor or not

66 or even 67 Coronet is one of the red headed step children of the muscle car world

IMO, high 40's to as high as upper 50's would be realistic in todays economy, again just MY  :Twocents:

Be wary about the mileage. Low miles mean nothing. How it was taken car of and stored matters more. I have seen 60,000 mile cars that were 10 times better than some 3000 mile cars that were abused and put away wet.

Ghoste

Yeah, 3000 miles a 1/4 mile at a time could be stressful.  :D :icon_smile_wink:

The fender tag on my rough 1966 Plymouth Satellite HP2 had 733 coded on it for the hemi, 4-speed combo, but I don't remember if Dodge used the same code that year for their fender tags.  Be careful when looking at the body numbers on 1966s, as they used SOs instead of the VIN numbers.  They should still match the SO number on the fender tag.....

We have gotten some advice from a west coast expert. Quite a nice find as it turns out. Look over to Moparts, There is a good description with pics over there. My user name is Indy Dart on that site. I believe it is in the questions and answers area. "1966 hemi coronet decoder info"

Let us know how it turns out, if you bought it, etc., etc., and good luck  and do your homework well as there are a lot of scams out there on alleged numbers matching high value cars, etc.

IMO 20K tops.  The hemi is worth more than that ugly car.

I believe the post cars don't look as nice. The hardtops in that model are pretty darn sharp As far as the price goes it has been sold twice now for much more than 20K.

I guess we all have different taste. The only one you need to please is yourself. I guess we here on Dodge Charger are pretty biased. :coolgleamA:
