Nope, but cool.  I use the Valvoline ZR1 racing oil with zinc.

there is a big vendor guy on moparts that talks about this... i think its the dude who is the editor of MCG.  he gets hit hard for promoting it.

oh right , had a bit of a debate over on moparts have they  ,  never heard of that oil before,  , think i'll just stick to Castrols 20/50  & 10/40 with  compcams additive

So what numbers are we lookig for? I know there's a big sticky thread about this but for a quick reference, what kind of zinc content is needed?

should use the new holland tractor and off road oils. has all the zinc and stuff in it still, and you can buy it in large quantities.

Any branded oil like Castrol, Valvoline, Pennzoil or Mobil will do if it's an acceptable weight - 5W-20 for 4-cyl.

5W-30 oil is better because 5W-20 is too thin, and that the manufacturer recommends 5W-20 only because they wanted better fuel efficiency. I would recommend sticking with the factory-recommended specs for now.

For your modern daily driver, the above is OK.  But for a flat tappet muscle car engine, or just about any high performance application, the current name brand oils on the shelf (SM grade) are bad news with the reduced additive packages.    It doesn't matter whether it is conventional or synthetic.  Even the CJ grade diesel oils have reduced additive packages now.

As mentioned the Valvoline VR-1 is a good choice, but it is a warm weather 20W-50 oil.   Brad Penn (sold through distributors) is also an excellent oil.    You can use an additive to the off the shelf oils, but to a degree you are then playing chemist.   Given the choice, I'd rather just buy the right oil.

Welcome Lisa  We have a big issue here about the changes required to oil and how many have wiped out there cams due to improper notification of this sweeping legislature. We feel a warning should have been posted on the reduced zinc oils to alert all the owners of flat tappet cam engines made over the last 100 years.

I have been seeing that oil advertized in the mags. Typical for YO to want $8 a quart plus who knows how much for shipping. I also use Valvoline VR-1, $3.99, it's off the shelf and has everything you need for a flat tappet motor.
