Oh yeah, big block. My 383 has that number stamped on the block right where the distributor sits.
On the side of the block, passenger side IIRC, there are some casting numbers. That will tell you the block size and manufacture date.

There is a big 5R there...
:ahum: :ahum: :ahum:
I'm stumped. There are members here that know far more than I do when it comes to deciphering engine blocks. I'm sure one of them will chime in.

Ok so I looked closer and behind the water pump on a flat portion of the metal it has J440 and maybe a 2 and E or F in the corners of that same space.

I think I send you a PM about your "extra" roof.  Not sure if it went through; I'm still learning all the buttons etc on this forum.  If you wanted to part with it how much and what condition is it in?  I'm probably moving to Aberdeen Maryland next year and my parents still live in NJ.

I think the J-440 may mean 1975 440. Probably pulled from a junk yard station wagon or C-body.  LEON.

P.S. The E probably means cast crank.

E=1969
F=70
G=71
H=72
I=73
J=74

Sometimes the I is skipped not to be confused with #1. If so I guess it could be 73. :scratchchin:  LEON.
