Speedometer going out in 3rd Gen

Today I decided that my '73 charger was running well enough to commute to work in for the first time.  During my commute, the speedometer started acting flakey and I could hear a distinct sound under the dash that sounded like gears slipping.  When they slipped, the speedometer would shoot up in MPH.

Can anyone help me narrow down the issue, and the strategy for fixing it?

THANKS!

oiling the wire and maybe to the speedo hole itself... I will deal with that pretty soon. Got a noise when running between 20 to 30 MPH since a week ago

Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

When they go it is not pretty, I was 100 miles from my new Air Force base when mine (in a landcruiser) did what yours is doing for about 10-15 miles then bound up and spun like a fan doing 360's till it let out a sqweel and snapped dead hanging limp in the dash!  :o I would unhook it at the back of the speedo and pull the cable out if you can.

First unhook your speedometer housing off the back of speedo head and then with needle nose pull the wire cable out of housing, check it for bad places, if none, clean it and then lube it with white litheum grease, lots of times a lube job is all it takes>

Thanks everyone!  On the way home, it actually worked flawlessly.  But I think it's telling me to get ready.  I will do some proactive maintenance.
