My family has known a guy for years that had a 70 charger. he ordered it new with  the 440-6 with a three on the tree. All I know is that it is gold and might have a black or tan interior. it also has a bench seat and AM/FM radio. last time my dad saw the car it was torn apart and last time I saw it it was at the guys moms house in the garage. Dose anyone know if this could be a possible 1 of 1 car? and does anyone have info on this car?

See if you can get some pics.   There is a lot of good information on '70's at the 1970 Charger Registry http://www.1970chargerregistry.com/.

Do some research there and let us know what you come up with.

I do find it strange that someone would order a 390 HP car with a 3spd on the column, but I am sure stranger things have happened.

A three on the tree 6 pac car? Definately would be an odd combination.

mustanghater

He ordered it new in 70 when he got married, the car is a legend around here. My dad has tried to buy it since he first saw it. The guy knows its rare and is a car guy but children came and the project came to a halt.

it doesn't even list a 3-speed charger in the production figures.

Mr. Wonderful's version of "3 on the Tree" means he had a six pack car with an auto column. It's not common, but not very rare for the car either. I would love to get the numbers off this car, considering a certain someone knows so much about it.

I'll be waiting...

Its sits  a street over from my grandmas. I'll go look at it this weekend cause i'm going to look at a duster in the area.

I was looking at an R/T with a bench about a year ago.  54,000 mi survivor in IA.  Just couldn't do it with the bench and the column shift.

I thought the bench seat was only available with the XH29 base Charger starting in 1970. The XH29 was designed to get the base price down by deleting things like the bucket seats, upper door pads, and rear tail panel trim. When you opted for the XP29 (Charger 500) or XS29 (R/T) I thought the buckets came with the package.  ???  Also, got me thinking....was there a buddy seat available in 1970 with the high back buckets?  I have never heard of a Charger R/T with a bench seat either...not to say it is not possible though.

Hmmmmm strange combo indeed. This will require X file type investigation.  :icon_smile_wink:

Is it really so strange to have a bench seat in a '70 Charger R/T, I mean the '70 Superbee came that way and the 70 Road Runner as well....I've personally seen both kinds of cars that way....why not a Charger as well.  As a matter of fact,Jerry Jueneman who owned the Wheels and Spokes museum in Hays,KS had a 70 Charger R/T with a Hemi eng and a column A/T...as far as having a column shift A/T on an R/T model is concerned. As well as a Daytona or two and some Road Runners as well.

But the 3spd column shift M/T......I really have a hard time accepting that one.  I would think that the 440 would be to much for the 'lil 3spd manual trany, let alone a sixpak 440!

The Roadrunner and Super Bee were not upscale models. They were built for performance while the Charger R/T was luxury performance. IMO the Plymouth GTX and Dodge Coronet R/T are more in line with a Charger R/T and I have not seen either of them with bench seats either.

Hey Chris,I owned a 70 Charger, that had a three on the tree,it was a 318 3 speed manual on the column. It was the most stripped down Charger I had ever seen! It had no options not even the upper pads on the door panels,no clock in the dash, just a design where the clock would have been.I know that the three speed manual was the base transmission for a 383 car,but it was not offered on an R/T.

What you owned is an example the XH29 base model. The only 2nd generation it was offered in was 1970. The XP29 Charger "500" model was more or less just a new name for the base model XP29 Charger from 1968 and 1969.

Troy, if you had an column shift, the you either had the buddy seat (C21) or just buckets and nothing in between. No XS Chargers came with a bench seat unless they were special ordered or installed at a later date.

Yes, you are correct. You could get a 3spd manual (D11) with the 318, but not with a 440 (R/T). You pretty much described how an XH Charger comes from the factory. Very stripped down, but you could get a 383 pistol grip in the car   :icon_smile_cool:.

Oh and Troy (Admin), I'm not laughing. :icon_smile_dead: :P

I should have mentioned I was refering to a '69.
