Any tips for painting over "chromed" racing/ralley door mirror? I got a good deal on 1 "painted" and 1 "chrome" and would like to do both in b5blue? I was thinking a good scuffing and maybe wipe with acid? Epoxy primer?  :shruggy:

What is the condition of the plating?  I ask because it might be better to try and trade it for a painted one.  That said, I have never seen good results (or at least long lasting) just painting over chrome.  But I'm no body man so maybe someone has the perfect way.  Scuffing it is a start but removing the plating altogether is best.  Unfortunately, that mirror is almost certainly pot metal so stripping the chrome with acid is a process that requires a lot of care.  This is all just my unknowing opinion though.

Ive painted chrome a few times....I lightly sandblast then epoxy primer, then scuff and paint.

Doh!  Sandblasting!  That is a much better idea than using acid on that thing.

Now that's a good idea, sandblast, scuff, prime then paint. Yea Ghoste I was hoping for a matching pair but they bring too much money (that I don't have  :eek2:) The chrome one has a few minor pits in it and I just bought the painted one, it's not here yet. (Painted sets on eBay go for more than chrome ones oddly)

you can sanblast or glass bead and prime fairly easy, just take them apart first.

remove the chrome if you want a good job

If the chrome is intact it wont matter either way.  :eek2: Silly Nacho.

Take it to a chrome plating shop and they will de-chrome it for you. They use electrolysis so it should be good for the metal. It is really cheap too. The plating shop in my town wanted $60 for my whole bumper. Chrome is too hard to paint over especially if the object is going to get a lot of wear(like mirrors lol ;))

Ideally removing the chrome is the best way,but I have had zero problems painting over it if prepped right.

I have always been told that doing anything over any ammount of chrome reduces durability, however, i'm sure if prepped right there wouldn't be any problems. Heavily sandblast or paper it and epoxy prime it like everyone said and you should be good :2thumbs:

another option is powder coat. That can be done right over the chrome as long as its not flaking.
