Electric fuel pump failure

How often do electric fuel pumps fail. My experience with them so far has been poor. The pump on my 72 just flat quit today. I started following down the wire to it, to make sure it had power to the pump, by the time I found the pump, which is mounted to a home made bracket just in front of the passenger side (front) spring perch, and started pulling out the wires, the pump started working. I did smack the pump around a bit. I pulled and tugged on the wire connections, and the ground wire. All were tight. Pump continued to run while tugging at the wires. I was hoping for a bad connection, that is most definitely easier to fix.

This makes me a little less than confident that the pump is going to be reliable.

Are mechanical pumps more reliable, and able to feed a 400 HP 360? I know they are quieter.

I would think a mechanical pump would be fine for a street car,,,
I run one on my 496 Stroker, pump gas, "street" car with no issues......

  all you really need for the street is a mechanical pump
  if you have edelbrock /carter carb , you want no more than 6 1/2 psi

I've been meaning to ask why people mount electric fuel pumps on street cars anyway.  Are there any advantages?  Pros, cons?  Would the OP lose anything by going back to mechanical?
