Will a E body rear end bolt up to a 3rd gen B body (73 Charger) or are the spring perches wider or narrower?  Thanks.  I am sure this has been answered thousands of times.

The perches are about an inch narrower on the E-body.

Axles and Housings

Because the 8-3/4" axle was available in most body lines, there are a variety of housings available.  Following are SOME of the passenger car axle dimensions and notations.  The 'Perches' dimension is the distance center to center between the spring mount perches.  Dimensions are in inches.

 Body line      Track       Perches                Notes
-------------  ----------  -----------     -----------------------
A-body, 65-72    55.6         43.0         4" lug bolt circle, offered in heavy duty apps.
B-body, 62-70    59.2         44.0
B-body, 71-72    62.0         47.3
B-body, 71-72    63.4         47.3         station wagon
C-body, 64-72    63.4         47.3
D-body, 64-72    63.4         47.3
E-body, 70-74    60.7         46.0

It's basically as simple as cutting them off and rewelding but I think you know enough about welding panels in bodywork to realize that answer involves a little more than how it sounds.

Cooter

I have done this MANY times in the past. The biggest thing you have to be careful with is the torch when "Torchin" the perches off...If you do this correctly, you will be able to grind the round portion out and won't have any holes your axle tubes either....

Welding them back on all you need to do is mark the housing where the old ones WERE and reweld them in the exact place. Some prefer to get the rearend back in the car and using an angle finder to find the best pinion angle then, reweld...

i did mine, but this is what i did to prep for the new perches

1. put the axle onto two saw horses
2. leveled the axle by using a level on the flat part of the spring perches
3. cut one perch off and measured the accurate distance for the new perch
4. tack welded new perch into place and re-leveled the axle
5. did 1-4 to the opposite side
6. let it cool down
7. welded both sides for good

voila!!!

you avoid the whole pinion angle tool when doing this.
