I have an older HD TV, 2001 Pioneer Elite Pro 610HD without an HDMI connection. If I buy a blueray player will I or won't I get true HD since the HDMI is not there? Or is it going to be close enough to not worry about it?

it is close when using the component cables but you will notice a difference if you got an hdmi equipped tele

It wont be the same. HD's from back then are not the same as tv's from 2-3 years ago to now. 1080I was the thing 3+ years ago. Now its 1080P (more Pixels = clearer picture). If you do not have a tv with HDMI, it will not be true modern HD. Plus newer tv's have faster processors. 120 Hertz, 240 hertz. Clearer sharper picture transitioning.

HDMI makes a HUGE difference! It will be just like watching regular DVD's without it.

I've got new HD TV few months ago with built-in HDMI receiver. It is HUGE difference between picture on HD compared to my older Sony LCD, I could hardly believe.  :yesnod:

Thanks so much for your responses. I have decided to hold off on a blu ray player until I update to a new flat screen HD TV. Don't know when that will be though.

Just walking around these days I can't help but notice how much cheaper HD sets are.  I picked up my 50" in '05 for $1400.  I can buy a 50" with 1080p now for a little over $700 if I go to the right place.  Good time to be a 'techie, I guess.

Have you guys seen any of those blu-ray demos where the playback is sooooooooo sharp and lifelike that a movie looks as if it was filmed in video?  I went to Sears yesterday and walked by some super setup.  They had the new Star Trek playing and it was like, dare I say it, almost being there.  Trippy...
