i just got to wondering if the MSD BOX may be overkill  :shruggy:

so do i need to run an MSD 6al - 6aln or will a ORANGE or CHROME MOPAR PERFORAMCE box get the job done

thanks RANDY

The Mopar ecu's will get it done BUT the MSD (or whatever brand you choose) will get it more done.  :icon_smile_big:  I like the fact that I eliminated the ballast resistor, got a rev limiter, and have easier starting and cleaner plugs with the MSD.

I've got a brand new MoPar Dist. Firecore wires, and no issues at all, if your not running high compression-big cam just save 600.00.  :shruggy:

600 dollars for an MSD-6AL?  Where are you shopping at?  I have about 200 bucks wrapped up into mine and I had to pay extra to get the black MP one.  I did get it on sale at the Mopar Nats but 600 dollars is insane.

I thought we were discussing just the box?  You will need plug and wires no matter what you use.  If we have decided to add an MSD distributor to the mix, that's a whole new ball game.

I run Mallory HiFire and it's cheaper than MSD and gets job done right

i've been shocked by a stock mopar ignition with a gold box, and a msd 6al. the mopar box hurt more, so i've concluded that must mean its still an ok system. :icon_smile_big:

Stock Electronic Chrysler iginition is hard to beat. MSD just means more headaches when it fails. MSD= multi shitty disfunction.  :Twocents:

msd cant be beat, great system and will improve your perfromance overall. the distributors are a waste in my opinion. i see plenty of 10 second cars runnign the stock mopar distributor

I have an MSD in my race cars, and on my 72 Rallye 440 with a Mopar electronic distributor.  The MSD box made hot starts much easier, and if I stay under 3k on the tach, I get a few extra MPG.

MSDs rarely fail if mounted properly.  Good investment for old school ignition systems.

Put a MSD box in it, you wont regret it.  I run a MP distributor ( just re-curved it,,,which was easy ),,,
Mounted the MSD box under the heater box on the passenger side,,,out of site,,,and away from any engine heat....

I have had multiple issues with the orange and chrome boxes,,,,been stranded more than once,,,,and the performance is not as good as the MSD box.....

the plain 6A or 6AL should be fine for street duty.........

Charger-Bodie

I use the 6al for the benifit of having a rev limiter......Cheap insurance if you ask me. other than tha ,Mopar dist.,and Firecore wires.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

You can run it with the stock distributor but you might want to tune your advance curve.  As for the reliability of the Chrysler ecu's over the MSD, I've had far more of the Chrysler ones fail.  My personal loss on them is about a half dozen over the years.  I haven't had an MSD fail yet but a friend of mine had one go down.  He sent it back to Accutronics and they fixed it, all he had to pay was shipping.

You can run the stock MP distributor,,,,,,with the MSD,,,no problems....

You should "curve" or have somebody curve the distributor for your application,,,,it is pretty easy to do...and if you need help with it,,,,,we could walk you thru it....
Do you have a MP distributor now ?,,,if so,,,i would run that.......with the MSD.........

I have always used MP stuff, both orange and chrome without issues but see an advantage with a revlimiter.

I used a chrome mopar ignition and a mallory 6a and noticed no difference at all in performance or starting. Then I got the mallory wet and it died.

I have a MSD street fire box with a stock recurved electronic distributor. Works well.  Mild 446.

On road trips I have an old point distributor I take with me  for emergencys. MSD boxes are not avialable at average parts store.
