Anyone have a source for a good weld in roll cage for a '68? I want it to fit in the car very well so I would like to see the finished product if anyone has it done. I did find one kit http://www.swracecars.com/store/10-Point-Roll-Cage-OSCARItem_35=11-2537.aspx but it just has a general pic of it. Their price is not bad and the 1 5/8 .134 wall should not add on too much weight. Also, where did you weld the plates to on the floor? Im thinking that bracing it up to the torsion bar x member would be strong for the front mount but I am not sure about where to put em for the B pillar area, maybe braced up to the rockers? I am planning on still being able to have people get in and out of the back seat so I want to make the door bars and cross bar removable using something like these http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/tube-coupler-flat-mount-p-376.html

Ron (Firefighter) has a cage from SW in his 68, though his is 8 point not 10.

Ive seen it in person (actually had to sit in the back seat, so got very "intimate" with his cage LOL)

Looks great, position of the front bars allow him to have full interior and not have to do some fancy maneuvers to get in or out. Also went with the "prostreet" bar option, this has the rear bars following the sail panels instead of going through the speaker holes....looks better IMO.

Think he paid $300 for it. They dont have it listed on their site though..you need to call.

I really like the look of a roll cage in the 2nd gen charger

Which bar did you get 'intimate' with? Id like to avoid that situation in my car. I would like the back passengers to be relatively confortable back there. I will put padding on the bars that may be close to someones head and plan on having the cross bar removable as well as the door bars.

Does he have those bars that kick out from the main hood to support it to the floor? They mount at the B pillar area and angle inward to give it support? Any problem getting into the back with those installed?

Pre-bent rollcage kits are crappy IMHO.  They get the job done if you just wanna race it but I wouldn't wanna put up with one for a street cruiser that I enjoy driving around at all.

It might be possible to make a pre-bent kit that does not fit like complete shit but I've never seen one yet.

Take a long hard look at the General Lee rollcages in the 2005 Stifler/Knoxville/Simpson movie.  They did a pretty ideal job of tucking the bars way outta the passengers' way but did not butcher the cars very much in the process.

people getting in the back will be getting intimate which most of the rear bars. I have a 6 pt custom bent in my 74 charger, and its a complete pain in the ass. So much that I really want to cut out the door bars and put something bent lower in there since its a bitch to get in and out since my knee surgery.

The bar directly behind the drivers and passengers front seats will be in the way, and usually the rear downbars will be a headache. Even with the padding put on. I had my bars bent up and down through the package tray of the car. IMO if your not racing it constantly leave the roll bars out of it. I wish i had on many days, like anytime i have to crawl in the backseat to get something. haha

For just a cool looking, improvement of rigidity standpoint, street capable without gymnastic entrances, a standard 6 point cage without diagonals will get the job done and look good doing it. I think where you can run in to issues is if you ever take that car to a track to participate in an event, be it drag racing, autocross, or track days, different sanctioning bodies have differing requirements about what is or isn't legal and there is the possibility they could refuse to let your car run with what they deem an inadequate roll cage system, whereas an unmodified car could be considered legal. The spreaders, diagonal, and door bars that make a cage legal in a lot of places are the same bars that make living with it on the street a chore. Whether or not removable bar systems are allowable, are also dependant upon the level of participation and the individual sanctioning body rules.

So, if you ever plan on running your car in a NASA event, or at an NHRA sanctioned track, you will need to investigate and understand their requirements before you put any blue light to the car.

In Rons car its quite comfortable, just need to do some work getting into the back seat. Fronts are just as easy if there is no bar at all. The back is fine once your in, just a matter of getting in first. At 6ft, it was a bit of a pain but im a skinny guy so was no big problem.
