Help me remember an old Baja 1000 racing memory

I want to say it was in the mid- to late-80s, there was a famous offroad racer who drove Dodge trucks and in one particular Baja race he was way ahead of the other trucks when he went over a jump and broke off one of the front wheels. He stopped, looked at the damage and then took off again and IIRC he finished and actually WON his class on three wheels.

Anyway, I'd be happy if I could just remember the guy's name so I could do my own research on the topic but it would be cool to know if this memory is real and not one of those phantom creations that came from wishful thinking. Nah, I kow it happened in some vague fashion to what I remember but I'd like to find out more. Thanks in advance.

I did read about him before I started this thread and it looked right by the description but the name didn't seem familiar; not that that means anything. The problem is now that he's into Hummers you can't get much of his history with Dodge.

I don't know but I'm pretty sure that's about the time he was sponsored by Mopar.

I think you're right. I sent my question to his son through the Rod Hall website. Maybe I'll get some answers, maybe not. No biggie, I just thought it was a cool testimony for Dodge trucks, but then again it did break so maybe it's more a testimony for Hall's driving skills. And now that I think about it he must not have had any brakes but somehow the steering still worked. :shruggy: Anyway, thanks for walking me through my senior moments Shawn.

Just so long as you walk me through mine.

Happy to help. But then I haven't gotten the impression that your memory is as monumentally bad as mine. :P

Didn't one or both of those guys have some special edition Dodge truck with their name in the stripe at one time?

Walker Evans? Do you remember that incident or just throwing the name out there for consideration?

Well, it wasn't Rod Hall. I got a reply from his son today and he said his dad doesn't recall any such event:

"Hello Curtis,

I doubt you were dreaming this up, but, no pop does not remember 3 wheeling it across a finish line in Baja.  Sorry!

Josh"
