I have a 1968 dodge charger r/t. How did the gas tank come from the factory? Should it be painted with tank tone paint, clear coat or just not painted at all to be correct? I am not going to have it concourse judged.

Thanks, Willy

The consensus seems to be to clear coat it. does anyone make a clear coat in a rattle can that is satin instead of high gloss? Or should i just use the high gloss?
Thanks for all the posts

I think most of the guys here just clear coat the tank. I know thats what I did.

I just leave mine galvanized, But I try to avoid water too. If you plan to drive it regularly, like in the rain you may want to clear it.

I cleared mine with this stuff. I also cleared a lot of bare metal parts as well. It comes with a hardner. It can be brushed or sprayed.

That clear POR-15 looks like the way to go. Now that I know about it, that's what I'm going to do when its time
to put a new tank in.

Going with the Lacquer.
The Varnish is Recommended for Motor windings, transformers, commutator ends, sealing electrical and electronic components, field coils, armatures, stator windings, rings and frames, bus bars and switchboard parts. Ideal for general coating, impregnating and insulation for electrical and electronic products, particularly small field and magnet coils, and inside walls of control boxes.

Before you paint, maybe you want to do some art work. Found this pic from a Road Runner. Maybe some design, or Mopar logo, or something different might be in order.

I cleared mine with Eastwood's Diamond Clear in a spray can. Their Nyalic clear was better, but they don't sell it anymore. Diamond Clear worked OK, too.
Also comes in a satin finish. Tank still looks good after many years.

Clear if that is the style you want the car to be...

OK I was wondering the same thing. What to do with the tank, but I never thought about putting art on it.I like it. :2thumbs:

It's good to hear you guys like the crushed Coyote. I love it but then I'm a Road Runner addict.

I've thought that artwork on the tank is truly unique. But what to do for a Charger? Nothing exactly connects to the Chargers, not like the Coyote does for Road Runners :scratchchin:

:icon_smile_question: Mopar logo, flames (HA!), paisley print (the 60s era), your car's nickname (sort of like the drag racers did in years gone by), or girl art (like WWII fighter planes). Just thinking out loud. If your car is a "she" then fighter plane art would work. Just get a vinyl decal, glue it on, and clear coat over it. Not too expensive I don't think. Just extra work to keep it clean.

Maybe a photo of your car on the tank. That would be cool.

Or how about the flattened image of a Mustang or Camaro? - lol
