Anyone got any tricks to cure a squeeky belt. My 95 Ram has a squeeky belt.  I dont drive this truck as much as I used to and it sits sometimes at least a month before I drive it  During this time it developed a small spot thats glazed I guess and it makes a squeek.   I have tried Belt Dressing and it makes it much worse. WD40 will quiet it clear down for a day or 2 and thats it. Driving it for days and days doesnt cure it either.  Everything is turning like it supposed to.  Was wondering if someone had a trick or mixture of something I could put on the belt. I had to put a waterpump on it about 4 years ago and decided to put a new belt on it then. Belt looks new so I dont really want to replace it again.

Todd,

I've replaced the belt on my '94 Ram a few times trying to quiet it down.

It squeals like hell, especially in the morning until it gets warm.

I finally asked my buddy that works at a dodge dealer about it, he popped the hood,

took a quick look, and said....

"Tensioner's shot"

Hmmm... :scratchchin:

I replaced the belt and the idler/tensioner thingie...

So far it's been quiet... ;)

Was the bearing wore out and it was wobbling?   I'll have to look into that.  I had the AC compressor go bad and it created a strain on everything on a trip home one time. AC went out. Thought it was using more gas then normal and got home to find the water pump wobbled and wore out from the stress. Maybe that tensioner is wearing more from when I had the problem. It was all fine for a while. I have the old belt still under my seat. Perhaps I should swap and see if its still there.

I've had a couple of tensioners go too and that is the same symptom I've always had.  They didn't seem wobbly tome when I took them but the squeal went away.  :shruggy:

Todd,

I don't know.

I got lazy and had a shop replace it when they did my brake job.

It's quiet now.

Here's a tip:

Check the steel brake lines between the frame and gas tank, mine rusted off, blew

out on me, and I damned near customized the ass-end of a buick. :eek2:

the spring gets weak in the tensioner. if all else fails use a belt with cross hatch grooves like the goodyear brand
third string oil changer

1 use goodyear gatorback belt, as others said check tensioner. I would replace, They don't cost alot. Clean the groved pulleys. Also check water pump bearings could be going bad. On the tensioner. My 99 rams was bad and I did not know it. It kept tension on the belt but the spring had broke, this is why I would replace. Alternator bearing too.
