Yes, it's a hoax.  People are still using the Mayan calendar?  The Mayans were pretty smart though - they built a calendar that still worked great 1200 years after their extinction.  I have to buy a new one for my garage every year, but the girls on mine are hotter.

why would anyone freak out about a culture that hasnt existed for over a 1000 years ago?

I haven't seen the movie but have been paying attention for about 6 years now, way before they thought of a movie, movies by nature are more dramatic than actual events for entertainment value

Y2K was strictly a computer thing, that people were working on fixing for many years before it came about and if they hadn't many people would be dead form the computers running the chemical dispensing stations into your drinking water dumping everything at once, been proven, known fact.  Y2K had nothing to do with the end of the world, the end of computer programs yes, not the end of the world

so you you think they (Mayans) are dummies for knowing about major events in the worlds history (recodred on their calender) and their calender just magically stops after 1200 years on 12-21-12, about the same time as all the planets line up and the earth, which is slightly tilted, nears its straight up and down position which it has been edging towards for many years?

you think that the egyptians just magically built things they had no physical capabilities or tools to do, made drawings on the ground that can only be seen from the air when they couldn't fly??

i don't profess to know what will happen but those are some events that known history hasn't seen (unless you count the Biblical flood) and if you think we are the only ones out here...........

i hope nothing happens so i get to eventually drive my car, although i think i have more to fear from my government right now concerning my car than 12-21-12

And Y2k (from a technological standpoint) can't really be called a "hoax". There definitely was a problem with date data. The "end of the world" believers just wanted a reason to party.

 There is a lot of things to consider, yes the Mayans got a lot of stuff right but from the way I see it, it's just the day they're calender end, the same way that our's end each year, and begin again the next one, so I think definitely if something happens will be a transformation of some kind, it may even be a small thing, there is no denial that the Earth will align with other Solar System Planets, but that happened before and didn't meant anything special at all.
However, the world ended before, more than once, if it didn't happened we would not be here, so the world  will end and I thing our generation will see it, I just have a problem believing it will be on 2012, the chances for that are the same of it happening today, no one knows when it's going to happen, but just in case, start building your garage bunkers so our Mopars will be safe!!!!!!!!!
And yep, we're definitely not alone in the universe, or even on our own planet, maybe 12.21.2012 will be the day when things start revealing!!!!!!!
And in case something bad happens, anyone in for the "End Of The World Mopar Cruise Day"?  


Ps. I didn't watched the movie, and frankly I don't feel like watching, I'm sick of seeing things like that get overly exaggerated and I think it already got old, but I did watched the season 13 finale of South Park, with a parody about it, it is very good and I recommend it, the name of the episode is "Pee".

I was tempted to see the movie after the first preview. Then I realized its from the same guy that did that horrid "The day After Tomorrow". Is this all that guy can do is come up with another lame ass movie of total chaos and destruction?? Special effects suck. The actors suck!

yeah...that's basically it. you take away the special effects and the destruction scenes and you have no movie. A really good "end of the world" movie that's at the opposite end of that (all story, little or no effects) is a little known canadian movie called "Last Night".
