Good morning,

Has anybody ever used a 70 Roadrunner Coupe (Post) to build a Superbird clone? I have not had any takers on my 70 V Code coupe and when my Charger is done I am considering converting it to a Superbird. I had my heart set on a Daytona but have the Roadrunner already.

I must be crazy but weighing all options!

I wouldn't turn a V code '70 Roadrunner into a Superbird clone James....they're just too cool of a car to modify :yesnod:

Drop the price so you're car will sell, then buy a 70 Charger and turn that into a Daytona clone.

Here's the same pic showing just the rear section. Helps make it look more like a bird..

Thanks guys!

I agree a V code should not be cloned and my dream is to do a Daytona so better stay with the plan!

It's not too difficult converting a coupe to a hardtop but it takes a few parts to do so and the b pillar has to be altered. I wouldn't do that to a valuable car, but wouldn't hesitate to convert a Satellite.
You would need the following parts from a hardtop: Door glasses, qtr glasses and regulators, b pillar glass closeouts, upper inner qtr trim panels (steel), the headliner trims, window cranks, roof rail weatherstrips and retainers.
In addition to cutting the slots in the b pillars, you would also have to cut the holes for the window cranks in the lower qtr trim panels.

Great information. Thank you!

I better stick with my plan to build a Daytona clone. Maybe somebody who wants to restore my Roadrunner will trade me a clone project!

OK I'll bite...why is it like that?  I thought the race cars started as hardtops.  Did they do that for a partial windows down rule or something?

myaerocars

I built my clone off a Coupe Road Runner in 1992... still have it.  Besides, my  post body is a mini built in roll bar! :2thumbs:

later i got most all i need to convert to a hardtop...just have not done it.
Godspeed,
Jon

Race cars start as a body in white.   You probably know this, but just to say so to those who may not know, none of the race cars have any connection to the group of street Birds.   That said, I stumbled onto the above photo when the car was brand new, and was surprised to see the RM21 pillar and pop out windows.    At the time of that pic (the February ARCA race at Daytona), you could have full glass and that photo was at the time of the ARCA race.   I just assumed the car had full roll down glass.   At some point mid-season all the glass had be removed by NASCAR rule to slow the cars down a little.

This photo below is from the following Daytona 500 weekend.  For some reason the pillar looks much harder to see, but I think it is still there.  I can't recall ever seeing another Superbird race car with the pop out glass.
