I finally got the 727 together ,  so know I am fitting a TF-2 shift kit to the valve body and here is were I get stumped.
The trans I have has been messed with before, it is a 72 case and back half with a 70 and earlier front drum and reaction shaft support etc.
The valve body must also be an earlier one as it has no PTK, when I pulled the valve body apart I found that it allready has a B&M shift kit so I still put all the TF-2 parts in.
I went to remove the shuttle valve and it has no spring and  a solid rod instead, the valve still moves slightly.
I looked through some books that I have and they all seem to have a spring so I searched the net and found a little info that the  rod is meant to firm the shifts, it also did not have an accumulator spring installed but I can see the marks on the piston  where one once was.

Is it necessary to put the shuttle valve spring back in? if so will a 78 spring work? the  78 valve body has 2 springs, one internal and one external and would it also be wise to put the accumulater spring back in as well?

I have never used this trans as I got it in a non going car, but everything inside looked to be in great condition
Any advise will be much appreciated as I am pulling my hair out and trust me , I don't have much to pull out.

Thanks

RD

the b&m shift kit calls for the removal of the accumulator spring and the installation of the rod behind the shuttle valve.

i dont use the transgo kit so ask John_Kunkel on the proper installation.

..............U should use a different vb...the seperator plate may b drilled different places as well as the casting.......shuttle can be blocked as some kits call 4 it.....ur choice as it does firm up the shifts......acc spring can b on top or under piston........some call 4 a blocker rod under the acc..........really firms up the shifts.....ur choice again.........use the spacer and big spring 4 the rear piston...........front piston use both springs if old style piston....use a 3.8 or 4.2 lever , not a 5.0....install cupped orifice plug 4 hi clutch passage................kim......

Some of the '71 and later valve bodies had no PTK, the casting dates on the VB halves give a clue as to the year. Putting a '70 or earlier VB in a 71+ case effectively blocks part of the accumulator function.

The blocker rod in the shuttle valve can stay but it's an old school mod as are most of the "plate kits". Ditto for the accumulator spring, it's best to have it there but if it's missing it's no big deal...many have been removed for dubious reasons.

Thanks for the replies,  another reason that it seems to be an earlier valve body is that it has no bypass valve or ball and spring and it looks like it never has had one.
The separator plate is B&m one so the only mod I did to it was drill the additional 1/8th hole under the existing 2-3 shift hole as the B&m plate only has the one hole and they remove the ball in the valve body,  I reinstalled the ball as  I want firm shifts not really hard ones.
The hole for for the low/ reverse piston is also 3/8 where  Trans go tell you to drill to 3/16 but it is OK if bigger.
The only numbers on the valve body are 2466885-8   there also 885 cast in it, any idea what year it may be?

John, can you please explain the partial blocking of the accumulator with the early valve body, I offered the separator plate up to the trans and every thing lines up well.

The casting number dates from '66, one of the worst valve bodies ever. Check the casting for a restrictor orifice (see pic below) and open it up if not already done.

The partial blockage of the accumulator isn't a physical blockage but an operational blockage. The '71 and later case applies line pressure to 3 surfaces of the accumulator piston, the '70 and earlier only 2. Using an early VB in a '71 or later case directs line pressure to the smallest area of the piston which reduces the accumulator's ability to cushion the 1-2 shift....desireable to some.

My valve body has that restrictor and I drilled  it up to 1/8th, the other valve body I have is a 1980 would that be a better one to use or worse?
Also what is your view on the brass filters that transgo supply?

John_Kunkel

I would go ahead and use the '66 over the '80. The brass filter flows more but filters less, I prefer the Dacron filters.
