Hemi projects ?

Over the past few years I've seen lots of 68-70 charger projects for sale. I've seen a couple appear on the IL hunt recently, also the red 69 hemi being restored by a member. Can't remember seeing a hemi 68-70 r/t project for sale in years. Have they all been restored ?

Craiglist and ebay are flooded with lots of r/t's but all seem to be 440 cars.

Ghoste

I think when you consider the numbers it isn't too surprising.  There were so many more 440 cars built than Hemis that it isn't even funny.  We're talking approximately 18,000 440 RT's compared to about 400 Hemi Chargers for 1969 as an example.  Then factor in the Hemi itself and you have to figure there wasn't much middle ground with them; they were  either raced to death or carefully preserved all along because of their expense and exclusiveness.  I'm sure there are still a few Hemi projects waiting to be found but compared to the number of 440 projects, I am not even a little surprised.

Charger440RDN

You hardly ever see an original 426 Hemi engine for sale on craigslist or ebay either and if you do they want $15-20K for it.

charger_fan_4ever

yikes 400 hemi's in 69 even less than the wing cars and right about even with the 500's.I knew that in 68-9 the r/t count was around 18,000 built. I just assumed ~10% of those were hemi's. Wrong

I knew they were rare but didn't realize how few were made.

Ghoste

I think in 68 there may be slightly fewer RT's total and slightly more Hemi Chargers but the numbers still come out much less than 10%.  It was an engine option that required a heavy wallet even when new to purchase (on the order of another 30% over the base price) and maintain so no surprise really.
It should also be no surprise based on the buy in figures to learn that of roughyl 45,000 Road Runners built in 68 that around 1000 of them had a Hemi (much cheaper car to buy than a Charger so there was some money left over for a Hemi  :icon_smile_wink: ).

hemi68charger

I had my '68 LL1 Hemi Charger R/T up for sale for awhile until I made the horse-trading deal to get my current Daytona. I'm sure they are out there being done, just not on a public forum or known about.

I know of a few... wait... I think I'm the outlier....

charger_fan_4ever

With HemiGeno's car and the other 68 hemi in the classifieds both priced at 65k you wouldn't want to buy a rusty shell missing the hemi for 25K.

Ghoste

That's a fact.  It would be impossible to duplicate Gene's car for 65k.  I doubt you could do it even if you did all the work yourself.

Charger440RDN

You really can't duplicate that car if you start out with a Hemi engine priced at $35,500 look at this ad on craigslist  :smilielol: :smilielol:

Might sell for that, depends on the magic numbers(if any) stamped on the vin pad.
Wouldn't that be freaky if it was the numbers motor for hemigeno's car.

Well, we started with somewhat of a "known" 69 Hemi Charger 4speed, but everyone knows the condition it was in and it's taken a small fortune just to get the metal work complete and to the stage it's at now... all told, concours-restoration is going to be well in the 6-figures but even though the value might now sustain spending that kind of money today, the car (to us) is well worth it... originally sold in our home-town (know the original dealer), knew the only owner, 59k original miles, all-matching numbers, etc...

By Galen's numbers (for whatever it's worth), less than half of the estimated number of '69 hemi cars produced are accounted for in the last 25-yrs or so he's been doing what he's doing...
