I juggle phones, machines and e-mails all day,. sometimes,..  things happen..   :yesnod:

TruckDriver

Well, most of you know I drive a dump truck. We haul mostly asphalt. I took these today.

1st pic is of the Sussex, Wi. asphalt plant we were hauling out of today. It is a new plant this year. They moved the old one that was here to a different town west of here. This new plant can run up to 700 ton a hour (only running about 320 ton a hour today). It has 5 - 300 ton silos, 2 truck scales, and 10 feeder bins which you can't see hidden behind the plant. The ashalt temp averages between 250 to 350 degrees depending on the plant manager and the plant your at.
2nd pic is when I was getting ready to load.
3rd pic is one of our trucks getting loaded. We usually get 3 drops from the silo. Each drop for one of the quad axle trucks is about 7 to 8 ton a drop. You have to be alert when you load as I seen a few guys screw up and get dumped on the cab instead of in the box. Needless to say, hot asphalt is not good to paint and fiberglass hoods.

4th pic We were running 2 pavers today. Normally we don't. But on state jobs and roads that have passing lanes like here, we run two at a time. That is one of our trucks that was bought last year. Mine looks the same, but I got more crome ;D If you notice the way the crew is dressed, it was only in the mid 30s today here. That's my forman on the small paver by the tank truck.
5th pic This pic I took when I was in the 2nd smaller paver. We were not moving at the time.
6th pic Just a shot of the road we were doing, state hwy 175 in Addison, Wi.

I lost track when the fuel prices sky rocketed, But a load of Super Pave is around $500 - $525 or so a load. So around $20.00 a ton or so. They make a LOT of Super Pave asphalt here now. It's super sticky and lasts a lot longer then regular asphalt. The state uses it on everything now. So do a lot of major businesses for parking lots. I know too the concrete is cheaper then asphalt now. But those prices again are for the high end mix. The cheaper grade 1 to grade 4 mix, privet binder/recycle mix is even cheaper. They try not to run pure virgin mix unless it is requested.

Yep at my depot we run Orion V & Orion VII's.  Nothing but trouble. A lot of issues have been retrofitted/reworked with the Orion VII's

The Orion V's were originally Cummins CNG powered.   We have since repowered then to Detroit Deisel Series 50's CNG powered.

Yes the whole fleet is CNG.  Much cleaner than the diesel.  Worked at another depot a while back that had Deesel RTS & Nova's as well

What major issues did you have with the V & VII's?  Was it mostly the engines or did you have a lot of issues with some of the smaller components on the bus?
Never had any VI's to work on?  I know they (Orion) are working on the VIII as we speak but with Daimler taking over a few years back, the design process involves a lot more people now on both sides of he Atlantic - imagine that!  ::)

Are you aware that the old Nova RTS facility has been purchased and a new company has been formed?  Millennium Transit will start manufacturing the old Nova RTS's with their first order for New Jersey Transit starting next year.  I don't think that all of them will be painted this way, just some!   :icon_smile_big:

I might just come an see you one of these days.  I'll call it a fact finding mission and we can see how far we can push the envelope with my expense account.      :smoke: :smoke: :smoke: :drive: :drive: :drive:

Just 6T9 CHGR

Mike, the VII's mainly have issues with smaller design aspects as well as some larger components (mufflers, steering boxes, hydraulic fan motors and other multiplexing programs)
A lot of the engine troubles are inherent to the CNG aspect of the fuel system.   They run much hotter than diesels and are very finicky with the fuel management as well.
We've been through 2 designs of mufflers (actually melt the steel because of exh temps) 4-5 different designs of exhaust blankets (we have 4 or 5 40ft flower pots in the depot because of fire....real scary on a CNG bus)
Also on the engine side, the low psi regulators (drop the working psi to the engine from 3600 psi down to 110 psi) have been reworked 4 or 5 times as well.
We have outside vendors doing warranty work on the engine side (Atlantic Detroit Diesel)   The MTA bought a 5 year warranty on the New Flyers and only a 2 year on the VII.....all of our buses are almost off warranty now.     This is where the fun begins.   Sadly, out of the 60 or so Maintainers in my depot (thats their title...not mechanics) only a small handfull are decent diagnosticians....all the rest are parts changers.     The parts changers went out with the old RTS 04 & 06......now those were REAL buses!     Black smoke belchin', 8-71 blown, run forever beasts!     I've seen small animals get sucked into the blower screen to stay running! ;)

Funny thing is that Daimler owns Atlantic Diesel as well so they're shooting themselves in both feet!
The MTA has put many a company out of business before.....I believe Atlantic is next!

Never had any VI's here, only V's and they have been retrofitted so many times they cant print up wiring diagram revisions fast enough!

RTS was a real bus when GM owned it.  Couldnt kill them.   The NOVA design is still much better than these low-floor crappers we have.  NYC streets are killers on them.  Because of the low profile tires on the New Flyers you wouldnt believe how many rims/tires we go through a week!   Good Year will never go out of business as long as the MTA is around!  (We're actually starting to convert the New Flyers to use the Orion VII tires now to try and allieveiate some of the damage)   oh did I mention that we got these buses in '99 (N/F) and NOW they are converting the tire sizes???

Here's the newest member to our fleet. The Hybrid electric model.   The MTA has about 50 of these now with about 300 more on order.   Dont have any at my location though

PS---Mike, where do you work???   Orion?
