Carter AVS series carburetor 4426S build dates....

I picked up one last year, and only now read the build date on the carb as "K8", meaning that the unit was built October 1968. As this carb was only used in 1968 model cars (correct?) I'm guessing that this is a replacement carb and not originally installed in a production vehicle. Agreed? Oh, well, at least I have one.    Thanks for any insights.
