Take a wire wheel to em or just find a local guy with a sand blaster im sure he will blast em for cheap.

SMS does do very nice work, I just got an exchanged set from them for my 73 r.r. and they work excellent!
The only problem I had was one upper hinge I was sent had heavy rust pitting my originals didn't. I'd use them again but I'd probably have them repair my own and not do an exchange.

Mine are missing the springs...me thinks the body shop lost em...however they were the ones that pointed out I needed em???
