Aerosmith looking for new singer, Steven Tyler no more....

I was shocked by this story. Sad actually. At this point, I think the rest of the band would be better off retiring as a band, then disgrace themselves with a new singer that just wont have the same voice Steven Tyler does.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091110/music_nm/us_aerosmith

Tue Nov 10, 3:05 am ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Who wants to become the new singer for Aerosmith?

The lead guitarist with one of America's most successful rock groups said on Monday that he and his bandmates were "positively looking for a new singer to work with," following a rift with energetic frontman Steven Tyler.

Joe Perry, 59, made the announcement on his Twitter page, ratcheting up an unusually public feud with his songwriting partner of 40 years.

The duo, dubbed the "Toxic Twins" for their hard-living days of yore, wrote such classic-rock staples as "Walk this Way" and "Love in an Elevator." Their musical relationship has been likened to that of their role models, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

But Tyler, 61, recently said he wants to concentrate on solo endeavors, a claim he has made in the past but never followed through on. He also stopped communicating with the rest of the band several months ago, and hired his own manager.

Perry told Reuters last month that Tyler has refused to write a song with him for a decade. More recently, Perry said that the last time he phoned Tyler, the singer hung up on him.

Incredibly, the band has still managed to perform concerts, but a summer trek through North America was cut short in August when Tyler fell off the stage and broke his shoulder. None of his bandmates accompanied him to the hospital.

"BRAND TYLER"

In recent weeks, Aerosmith reunited for a pair of shows in Hawaii, and then performed at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 1, temporarily papering over the cracks to recoup some of the revenue lost by the canceled American tour.

But Tyler surprised his bandmates by telling Britain's Classic Rock magazine, in an article published last Wednesday, that he would focus on his own projects, "Brand Tyler," as he dubbed it.

His bandmates were less than enthusiastic about being sidelined. In the same article, guitarist Brad Whitford raised the possibility of bringing in a new vocalist.

Tyler was "one of a kind," it quoted Whitford as saying. "But if somebody was willing to do it and the chemistry was right, why not?"

Perry quickly took to Twitter to express his dismay at learning about Tyler's apparent departure online, and he described Tyler's attitude as "a bit cold."

In his Twitter messages on Monday, in which he referred to Tyler simply as "one of the members," Perry denied Aerosmith would break up, saying the band was playing "hotter than ever."

"You just can't take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin!"

At any rate, Perry is now focusing on his own endeavors. He just released his fifth solo album, and plans an extensive world tour early next year.

Aerosmith previously fell apart in 1979, when Perry quit the band during its drug-fueled nadir. Whitford soon followed, leaving the rest of the band to limp along. The original lineup reconvened in 1984, sobered up, and eventually enjoyed a successful 1990s comeback fueled by MTV videos.

But the band has not released a studio album of new material since 2001. Recording sessions since then have been interrupted by ailments affected virtually every band member. For his part, Tyler did a stint in rehab last year.

While Perry has been vocal about the feud, Tyler has largely kept silent. But his daughter, Mia, also took to Twitter on Monday to defend him and to make a dig at Perry.

"They are in their 60s now," she wrote. "Let them do what they wanna do! & can someone please tell (Joe Perry) that gossiping on Twitter is uncalled (for)!"

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia responded to the feud by moving Tyler to its list of former Aerosmith members, but then restored him to the current lineup amid the uncertainty.

Tyler is just another greedy jerk that thinks he can do better on his own.
So many others have thought the same thing and fallen flat on their faces.
Hasnt Tyler ever heard "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"?
They could be making mega-bucks just touring and having a great time.
People want to listen to Aerosmith, not just Tyler.
I dont get it.

Saw them in the mid '80s and an unknown group named Guns and Roses opened for them,.. A pretty good concert I must say,.. Great to see two masters of the Les Paul demonstrate their art!
Well anyhow,..  I can understand it,.. somethings you have to do on your own artistically,.. this of course is not applicable if drugs and such is involved but if Steven is wanting to do some music and the Band/Perry isn't working out, so be it... I remember when Jimi and even Phil Lynott wanted to go in a different direction, It wasn't the Experiance or Lizzy, but if the man needs to follow his Muse so be it... Sometimes it's simply contractual issues. Who knows?..  :shruggy: I will allways admire their talants, individually or togeather..  :yesnod:

No big loss...the only decent thing Stephen Tyler's put out since 1977 is Liv.

Nothing in his defense, but he may already be happy with mega-bucks he already has........  He may want to try something different without the expectations of "sounding" like Aerosmith........

But, it is a shame this long-standing band seems to be no more...............   Has there even been an "official" announcement?

Aerosmith can't exist while Steven Tyler is listening from the audience.  The singer & band up onstage might be performing just as well but it's not gonna be the same band that we know.  Some bands can swap a singer w/o losing the group's original mojo but not this one IMHO.

If Steven Tyler really wanted to do a solo project then he should have just done it without the big breakup scene. Lots of other artists leave to do their own thing, sell two dozen copies of the solo record worldwide, and eventually come back to the band without all the fuss.

Will someone please remind Steven Tyler that he's 61?!?!!?? Much like their idols, Mick and Keith (who are 66 and 65, respectively), IT'S OVER. You are no longer relevant!!!

Anything Aerosmith (or the Stones) do at this point can be looked at as nothing more than a cash-grab.

Think Willie Mays with the Mets, Joe Namath with the Rams, and to a certain extent, Allen Iverson with the Memphis Grizzlies...

IT'S EMBARRASSING for us fans to see the likes of Tyler and Jagger up on stage preening and posing, trying to recapture even a sliver of the magic of 30+ years ago...

Just let us have our CD, 8-track, cassette, and vinyl, memories of you...not my grampaw up there sh!tting himself.

R.I.P. Aerosmith.

that pic must be a fake. I saw video of him at LAX just a week ago and he didn't look that bad at all. Not saying he looks the same as 20 years ago but that pic must not have been the real ST or... he has had a remarkable recovery because he looked much better than that at the airport.

Mike DC

My 64yo father isn't into fitness or appearance at all, and he still looks a hell of a lot better than Steven Tyler in that airport pic.

Drug-addled rockers just don't age well even in the better cases.

It's weird to think about it - Aerosmith has already done their middle-aged comeback thing, and THAT was almost 20 years ago.

WOW. He looks like my grandmother, and she's been dead twenty years.

I've been a Aerosmith fan since I saw them on their Get Your Wings Tour in November 74. Their first four albums were the best RnR you could ask for. They can still rock live but haven't written a good song for decades.

i think you guys are gluttons for gossip if you believe that photo is him.. geesh... seriously naive.

secondly, its his fricken life and whatever he does, how is it going to affect you?  would you want steven tyler telling you that your charger restoration is going to look like shit because its 40 years old and you shouldnt try and do things on your own?

come on people.  if the guy wants to do what he wants to do, why the hell do you give a shit? its his life.. not yours. i hear so many times on this board about how people tell each other "hey its your car, do with it what you want." The same goes with his life, as much as it does with yours.  Your judgment of his decisions are based ridiculously on your own needs which dont amount to one pile of goose crap in regards to what this guy goes ahead and does.

After all, he didnt ask for your permission did he?

don't forget that horrible power ballad off the "Armageddon" soundtrack.

Which brings me to my next point - that song was written by Diane Warren, who has also written for hard rock legends Celine Dion and LeeAnn Rimes.

All of those mega hits they had in during their mid 80's comeback and early 90's (dude looks like a lady, angel, crazy)? Desmond Child - he of "Living La Vida Loca" authorship. Granted, the dude does have more hard rock cred (KISS, Bon Jovi, Dream Theater), but it still sucks that Aerosmith can't write a song by themselves.

Oh man, that Armageddon song was a mess.

It was like the sound mixer had recorded the whole thing with all the "suck" levels up too high.

nh_mopar_fan

They got into a tiff with one of the local rock stations, WAAF, a few years ago right after they put out that "Armageddon" crap. They were complaining that the station wasn't playing any of their new stuff.

The response from AAF was to tell them that when they started playing rock again, they'd get air time.
